From Auckland to Korea, to the Phillipines, Thailand, Indonesia and India - the Turou Takitua Storytellers went on a global storytelling tour yesterday for the Kathai Kalatta’s Virtual International Folk Lore Festival, Ranga Rattinam, 2021

For many of those places - the likelihood of having a live storytelling gathering is still a long way off - and we were honoured to Zoom them some joy through our Cook Islands stories and drumming.

We're so blessed to be living in the Pacific - and we're ready for the world to start its healing - one story at a time.

Thank you to Aura and Mama Jeeva Raghunath for the invitation to participate in the festival, Meitaki maata to our Pacifica Mamas for always providing the strong foundation of support and encouragement + a huge thank to the Pacifica Arts Centre for giving Turou Takitua a safe and caring home base.

Four years ago Turou Takitua was invited to present at the Chennai Storytelling Festival in India. It was an amazing and humbling experience to share time and space with international Storytellers - and to forge beautiful connections across oceans....

Last weekend we connected with the world again - this time through Zoom. The Chennai Storytelling festival boasts hundreds of tellers and workshop leaders and a group of 60+ took part in a Moana Pacific Storytelling workshop with Tuaratini and Jarcinda Stowers-Ama.

Stories of Aotearoa and Te Moana Nui O Kiva never fail to fascinate and we were thrilled to share our small part of the world with everyone.

Thank you to the Pacifica Mamas for always providing the strong foundation of support and encouragement + Meitaki Maata to the Pacifica Arts Centre for giving Turou Takitua a safe and caring home base.

Prior to lockdown in New Zealand, the Turou Takitua Storytellers were out and about in the community - in libraries, schools, and galleries, sharing stories face to face and in person... During the lockdown, we've had to accept that we may not be able to return to those LIVE storytelling spaces for the next several months 😱😭

This weekend we were so grateful to be able to connect with other storytellers at the World Virtual Storytelling Conference 2020 (hosted by Eric Miller at the Story Institute in India) - Storytellers around the globe are having to adjust and reimagine and it was great to feel not so alone.

Last night we presented a workshop to the conference via Zoom and we're invigorated and ready to continue sharing stories this way until we can be together again. Thank you to our wonderful Pacifica Mamas at the Pacifica Arts Centre for nourishing our collective and providing us with a 'home base' for our work... It is YOU that provide the foundation and cultural guidance on our journey. Meitaki Maata!

Happy Storytelling.

The best part of being with the Pacifica Mamas (while they are on their residency at Government House in Wellington) are the stories... In just a few short days our cup is filled with amazing tales that fall effortlessly from their lips as their hands weave and create with consummate grace.

This is reminder that our best stories are not in Hollywood movies... They're in the mouths and minds of our elders. Share time with your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles... And experience the magic of stories close to you.

These are images from Government House in Wellington. Enjoy!
