Poutama is often described as the “stairway to heaven.” But within our traditional Māori understanding, we didn’t have heaven and hell in the way those ideas are understood today.

There was the physical world and the spirit world — a place we returned to when our physical life ended. You didn’t have to qualify to enter it. It was where our ancestors lived, and where the knowledge and wisdom of those who came before us continued to exist.

Poutama is an iconic symbol within Māori culture, traditionally seen in art forms such as tāniko and tukutuku. Its ascending steps speak of learning, growth, knowledge and advancement.

That is why I have chosen to paint Poutama.

For me, those steps represent the road towards enlightenment — the evolution of the human being. Each step is another experience, another lesson, another opportunity to understand ourselves more deeply and move towards a life lived with greater consciousness and complete joy.

For this painting, I’ll be working predominantly with purple, yellow and white, using these colours to bring my own interpretation to this powerful traditional form.

Poutama reminds me that enlightenment isn’t somewhere we suddenly arrive.

We reach it one step at a time.
