IN MEMORY OF DOUGLAS CHOWNS WHO DIED RECENTLY
(Patron of the NorthCal/Waipu Pipe Bands)

In 2021, Dougie was a regular at our Twisty Willow Reeling nights in the Whangarei Pipe Band Hall. He danced, often played his squeeze box and even taught some dances. He enjoyed the energy of the younger crowd. He chose to have a Ceilidh for his 84th birthday and invited all the young dancers, the pipers, Gaidhealtachtd friends... It was a special night. Dougie treated everyone with treacle buns on strings and apple bobbing, "Just like the old days". There were plenty of musical performances and dancing of course. He was a multi-talented man (artist, sculptor, musician, historian....) who lived and shared his life to the full. This video shows Dougie teaching a crazy dance that he wanted people to dance at his birthday. We will miss the many stories he liked to tell!

We had a good turnout of keen dancers at our Reeling (lively Ceilidh dancing) last night in the Waipu Coronation Hall.

The Waipu venue came in to its own with its air-conditioning providing relief on a warm humid night and the sprung floor encouraging some vigorous dancing. The pics show a more sedate dance - the Saint Bernard waltz.

It was pleasing to see whole families and all ages there.

We are encouraged to continue monthly Reeling on every second Friday night, 7.30pm. Put it in your diary now. Make up a group. Come and enjoy.

Plaidsong came to Waipu Scottish Country Dance Club's final night of the year last night. Their informal performance just blew us away! In just 3 short songs there was humour, wry commentary, interesting Scottish history, connection with the audience and superb musicianship.
They will be performing in the old schoolhouse at the Heritage Precinct in Waipu tomorrow night, Wednesday 6 December in an intermit setting. Check the poster for a performance not to be missed.
