Please encourage them to submit to the second Toi MAHARA Young Artists Exhibition, we'd love to see artwork in all media!

Entry is free and open to anyone aged 13–18 who is living, studying or working in the Kāpiti District.

Louie Zalk-Neale's exhibition 'Ngai-kore-tua-mao, she ditches, she floods' is on now at Toi MAHARA.

Ngai-kore-tua-mao is an ancestor of tī kōuka, a native plant also known as whanake or cabbage tree. From this whakapapa lineage, the tree inherited the ability to thrive in different climates — a fertile symbol of climate resilience, belonging and adaptation.

Louie Zalk-Neale’s work encourages us to see tī kōuka’s adaptabilty in a changing world full of new gifts and threats. Ngai-kore-tua-mao could guide us to dream of flourishing like the tī kōuka, through the floods and droughts of personal, environmental and political turmoil.

Visit Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–4pm. Entry is free.

Today is National Poetry Day!

To celebrate, we'd like to invite you to visit Toi MAHARA and enjoy the poetry of students from Te Kura o te Whaea Tapu o Kāpiti, Our Lady of Kāpiti School.

Listen to their writing and admire their paintings which explore 'Ngā Hononga: the interconnectedness of all things.'

The gallery is open Tuesday–Sunday. Entry is free.

Land, Women and Rangatiratanga features work by contemporary artists alongside historic taonga.

Artists as descendants of Kahe Te Rau o te Rangi and Te Rangitopeora are joined by others of Ngāti Toa, Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Raukawa and Te Wānanga o Raukawa who respond to these ancestral figures, honouring traditional forms while creating space for new narratives. Their works reflect the evolving tikanga that binds land, people, and time.

View carving, weaving and painting by Charlotte Orzecki, Gina Solomon, Elaine Bevan, Ezra Bevan, Neke Moa, Brian Climie, Aimee Porteners, Matene Te Putu Climie, Hinepuororangi Winiata, Hariata Ropata-Tangahoe, Adrienne Spratt, Chris Gerretzen, Erena Baker, Kere Pomare, Karl Leonard, Tracey Patete, Ranea Aperahama, Toi Waiariki tukutuku collective.

The exhibition runs until 1 November.

We would like to acknowledge all of the contributors to Land, Women and Rangatiratanga but particularly the kaitiaki taonga: Whānau Pomare and Whānau Bevan/Carkeek who have very generously lent us taonga of their tūpuna Kahe Te Rau o te Rangi and Te Rangitopeora.

We've had weavers with work in our exhibitions 'Land, Women and Rangatiratanga' and 'Ngai-kore-tua-mao, she ditches, she floods' demonstrating in the gallery over the last couple of weeks.

Now weaver and curator Kohai Grace is hosting an open session. Bring your weaving on Tuesday 25 August anytime between 10:30am–2pm and join her!
