We love seeing local businesses supporting local businesses.

A shout-out to Mary and Tim from The Olive Rabbit for sharing the love and helping showcase what makes our little corner of the world so special.

The Olive Rabbit is a beautiful boutique bed and breakfast that captures the essence of our region, a peaceful sanctuary nestled amongst the trees alongside the Tongariro River.

Mary and Tim have a genuine passion for people and creating meaningful connections, whether with locals or visitors from around the globe. Their warmth and hospitality make everyone feel welcome in this special corner of Aotearoa.

Ngฤ mihi for your ongoing support of the Trout Centre and our wider community.

I wanted to give a quick shout-out to our Educator Clint Green

This morning he pulled out a guitar and sang to a visiting kลhanga reo group. Last week he was holding up a rat while teaching international students about pest control and conservation.

There aren't many people who can pull out a guitar and pull out a rat while simultaneously teaching.

Clint brings a huge amount of passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm to everything he does, and we're lucky to have him sharing that with our visitors.

And yes, this is my subtle reminder that the Trout Centre offers education programmes for all sorts of groups and ages. ๐Ÿ˜Š

But for today, it's mostly just an appreciation post for Clint.

My sister and I spent part of the weekend walking the Turangi River Trail and appreciating what an incredible asset we have right here on our doorstep.

I'd highly recommend this "easy" 10-ish km loop between Red Hut Bridge and Major Jones Bridge. (I say "easy" because there are a few climbs that definitely reminded me that I spend more time behind a desk than on walking tracks these days!)

We parked at the Tongariro National Trout Centre which turned out to be the perfect starting and finishing point. Safe parking, toilets, and a destination at the end of the walk.

And yes... this is absolutely a shameless plug to consider parking at the Trout Centre (Troutcentre.com) when you do the walk. ๐Ÿ˜† *Reminder gates close at 4.30pm.

Once you've finished, you can reward yourself with an ice cream, coffee, cold drink, or just wander around the grounds and say hello to the trout.

Plug over ๐Ÿ˜œ

The walk took us just under 3 hours at a relaxed pace. We met plenty of other people out enjoying the track too โ€“ walkers, cyclists, dog walkers, and a few people who looked considerably fitter than us.

Beautiful river views, native bush, fresh air, and a few hours away from screens. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.

Turns out anglers may have known the secret all alongโ€ฆ ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ’™

A major New Zealand study has found trout fishing can have real benefits for mental health and wellbeing.

Fresh air, moving water, exercise, birdsong, good company, and a reason to slow down for a few hours โ€” science is finally catching up with what many fishers already knew. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So if you needed an excuse to spend a bit more time on the riverโ€ฆ this might be it.

It was an itch that Cohen Stewart started scratching and now it has led to one of the biggest surveys of fishers in the world. Mr Stewart, a...

Meet the Brown Trout. A top predator and master of adaptation.

From cold rivers and deep lakes to coastal systems, these fish have earned a reputation for being tough, opportunistic, and incredibly effective predators. Their golden-brown flanks, dark spotting, and red-orange spots make them one of the most recognizable fish in freshwater.

๐Ÿ”ฅ What makes them stand out:
โ€ข Golden-brown coloration that helps them blend into gravel, weeds, and tannic water
โ€ข Red and black spots that vary from fish to fish
โ€ข Powerful tails built for current, ambush, and fast bursts
โ€ข Large mouths that allow bigger trout to feed on fish, crayfish, and other larger prey

๐ŸŒŠ Where they hold:
Brown trout thrive in cool, well-oxygenated water, especially where rivers connect to lakes, cover is abundant, and deeper pools offer rest and refuge. Undercut banks, boulders, logs, and clean gravel are all key parts of healthy brown trout habitat.

๐Ÿชถ What they eat:
Mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges, terrestrials, crayfish, fish eggs, and small fish. As they grow, brown trout become even more aggressive and opportunistic and will seek out larger prey.

๐ŸŒ™ When they shine:
Brown trout are famous for being low-light hunters. Dawn, dusk, and even nighttime can be prime windows to find bigger fish on the move.

๐Ÿ’ก Why anglers love them:
They are smart, adaptable, hard-fighting, and often wary. Brown trout reward patience, good presentations, and time on the water.

Respect the water. Honor the habitat. Protect wild places.
