CPlay

CPlay Community initiative to create a new playground at Caroline Bay - fun, meaningful and inclusive! Play is one of the most important things that we can do.

Now that the equipment needs replacing, it’s time to break from traditional playgrounds and offer more stimulating and inclusive play for all ages and abilities. Kids want a fun, challenging playground where they can follow their imagination, play as their creativity takes them and not leave anyone out. The new playground can help our health, foster development, movement and promote social skills,

resilience and tolerance. And the new playground can also help us connect to our special stories, heritage and history. It's going to be fun, inclusive, meaningful and challenging - It's going to be EPIC!

Have you noticed this at CPlay in Timaru? Do you know what this stone is… and what you’re meant to do with it? If you’ve spent time at the CPlay playground at Caroline Bay, you’ve probably noticed a stone people often stop at. Where they touch and pause. It’s the mauri stone.

Chris and I found this stone at South Beach, Patiti Point, in a month that had two full moons, with the second known as a blue moon, on the night of the super moon.

In te ao Māori, mauri is the life force. The energy that lives in people, places, land and sea. This stone is a way of acknowledging that. A place where the wellbeing of this playground, and the people who use it, can be held.

The stone itself is chert (or maybe silcrete) from our own coastline.

The CPlay volunteers organised its installation as part of the playground upgrade, alongside the rock art and other elements that connect this space back to local stories and whenua.

And yes, you’re meant to touch it.
Place your hands on the stone. Leave a good thought. A wish. A hope for your kids. Or just take a breath in the middle of a busy day.

It’s a small thing, but small things matter. The mauri stone can remind us to let go of the negative and leave something positive behind...

Next time you’re at CPlay, stop for a moment. You’ll know what to do.

Kia ora koutou,

We’ve seen some recent comments on other pages about a little one who hurt themselves at the CPlay playground. Firstly, we want to acknowledge this and send our aroha. We’re sad to hear a four-year-old was injured. We’ve also received an email directly from the family, and have replied with our best wishes and guidance to contact TDC in the first instance. 💜

To be clear, CPlay was a community volunteer group that championed and fundraised for the project. The playground is now owned and operated by Timaru District Council (TDC). Any safety concerns, maintenance issues, or incidents need to go directly to them so they can be properly recorded and acted on:

👉 Lodge details via the Fix-it form: https://www.timaru.govt.nz/tell-us/fix-it-form

👉 Use the Snap Send Solve app (handy for quick reports with photos)
👉 For urgent issues, call Customer Services on 03 687 7200

For what it is worth... during the design and build, qualified playground specialists were involved at every stage, and the playground was audited before opening. It was designed to meet NZ Playground Safety Standard NZS 5828:2015, which focuses on preventing critical or fatal injuries. This standard does recognise that minor knocks, scrapes, and bruises are part of active play and learning risk awareness.

Natural elements like rocks and logs are permitted under the standard, provided spacing, height, and surfacing meet safety criteria... which were all very carefully considered, checked and signed off.

Our tamariki’s safety was taken extremely seriously throughout the process. While CPlay volunteers can’t speak on behalf of Council operations as they are the playground owner and operator, we want to reassure our community that professional safety standards were followed, and that TDC is the right team to respond to any ongoing concerns.

We hope the four year old is recovering well, and we send our warmest wishes to her whānau. 💜

Ngā mihi nui,
Roselyn Fauth
