"What do you see at sunset in the sky?"

When writer Steve Braunias interviewed artist Paul Hartigan recently, Hartigan had a different answer to most.

"Neon," he replies.

For more than 50 years, Paul Hartigan has been captivated by light. It's a fascination that has shaped one of New Zealand's most distinctive artistic careers, from his early paintings and text-based works through to the iconic neon sculptures that made him famous.

Today, while living with motor neurone disease, Hartigan continues to create. Looking through Hartigan's work, you begin to understand why he sees neon in a sunset. Recent works transform everyday objects into vessels of memory and connection, continuing a career-long fascination with how ordinary materials can be elevated into something extraordinary.

We're proud to have a small selection of Paul Hartigan's works available at Paper-Works Gallery. Visit the gallery to discover the work of an artist who finds new ways to see the world.

๐—œ๐—–๐—ฌ๐— ๐—œ: One of my favourite things? Seeing artworks find their place in a home.

Featured in NZ House & Garden magazine, this beautiful Auckland home brings together a considered collection of works, including pieces sourced from Paper-Works Gallery. The result is a space thoughtfully layered, where art is not just displayed, but lived with.

Itโ€™s a reminder that collecting doesnโ€™t need to be complicated. Often, itโ€™s simply about choosing works that resonate and allowing them to find their place over time.

Tax returns, power bills, or that letter you've been meaning to deal with since February. But Gavin Chilcott's latest works might just elevate the situation.

New to Paper-Works Gallery, these handcrafted document boxes and folders are designed to store important documents, treasured correspondence, photographs and the occasional administrative burden. They won't file the paperwork for you, but they will make your desk look considerably more organised.

Proof that not all art needs to hang on a wall. Sometimes the artwork is where you put the paperwork.

Available in a range of colours, visit the Paper-Works Gallery to explore the collection:

A few fragments from the archive of Singapore and Penang ....

A reminder that art doesnโ€™t always announce itself formally. Sometimes itโ€™s hanging perfectly lit in a gallery. Sometimes itโ€™s peeling gently off the side of a building in 32-degree heat.

The camera doesnโ€™t lie. But it does choose sides.

Photographer, writer, operator of many levers, Simon Shattky is less interested in the obvious shot and more in what sits just off to the edge of it. Youโ€™ll recognise his eye from pages of BayBuzz where image and text work together, each sharpening the other.

His practice moves between storytelling and observation, often landing somewhere wry, human, and quietly exacting. His approach? Not everything needs to be overworked or over-explained. As heโ€™s written elsewhere, sometimes the smartest move is knowing when to stop talking.
Because the first glance rarely tells the whole story.

They donโ€™t really end there.

John Pule's practice sits in that liminal space between language and image. His titles read like fragments of verse, and the works follow suit: layered, symbolic, slightly unsteady in the best way. Each of his works are a kind of cartography where memory, migration, and mythology collapse into one another.

Eliza Glyn paints places that feel recalled rather than seen forms softened, edges dissolved, everything suspended in a kind of atmospheric pause.

The result is something quietly immersive: measured, atmospheric, held together by restraint.

Introducing Synchro Systems by Florence & Rebecca, now on the walls.

A series where floral structures and the body begin to operate as one: held in a state of near-balance, where florals are not decorative but directive.

Still life, but only just.
Better in person, as always.
