Fatherโ€™s Day is this Sunday.
For the dad who has everything, we think thereโ€™s another option worth considering: ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜.

Something with character. Something that reflects the things he loves. Something heโ€™ll keep.

From Dick Frizzellโ€™s unmistakably Kiwi wit, to Matt Moriarty Artist's contemporary edge, Jake Hassellsโ€™ playful take on fishing and motorsport, and Andy Kingโ€™s photographs of the places we know and love, thereโ€™s plenty to discover.

Weโ€™ve brought together a selection of works by our much-loved male artists in our latest journal article.

Long summer days, the promise of a holiday, somewhere to park up and stay awhile.

In this work, contemporary New Zealand painter Geoffrey Notman turns his meticulous eye to one of our most recognisable symbols of summer. His highly detailed paintings often explore the relationship between people, place and the everyday objects that become part of our collective memory.

๐—œ๐—–๐—ฌ๐— ๐—œ: We loved seeing this Havelock North home featured in NZ House & Garden magazine, a century-old barn thoughtfully reimagined into a space layered with history, travel, and personal meaning.

Among the mix of inherited pieces and found objects sits a work sourced from Paper-Works Gallery, chosen as part of the coupleโ€™s journey in shaping a home that feels entirely their own.

Originally gifted a voucher to mark their engagement, the artwork became more than a gesture; it became part of the story. A piece selected with care, now woven into the rhythm of their everyday.

Itโ€™s a reminder that art helps define a space. Whether starting a collection or adding to one, choosing the right piece can transform how a space feels.

Over the course of his career, Bill Hammond's practice evolved dramatically. While many people know him for his later bird paintings, his wider body of work is filled with enigmatic figures, subtle narratives, and scenes that seem to exist somewhere between memory and myth.

Regarded as one of New Zealand's most influential contemporary artists, Hammond created paintings that rarely explain themselves. Instead, they invite us into haunting, dreamlike worlds inhabited by characters who are never in a rush.

That's part of the magic. Hammond's art rarely offers straightforward answers. The longer you spend with it, the more it begins to unfold.

We're fortunate to currently have four limited edition Bill Hammond lithographs in the gallery, each offering a glimpse into the imagination of one of New Zealand's most celebrated artists. Explore the collection:

It's been a little while since we shared a wider view of the gallery, so here's a glimpse of what's currently on the walls.

Since then, new artists have arrived and familiar works have found new homes. If it's been a while since your last visit, consider this your invitation to see what's new. There may be something here you haven't met yet. No two visits are ever quite the same.

"What do you see at sunset in the sky?"

When writer Steve Braunias interviewed artist Paul Hartigan recently, Hartigan had a different answer to most.

"Neon," he replies.

For more than 50 years, Paul Hartigan has been captivated by light. It's a fascination that has shaped one of New Zealand's most distinctive artistic careers, from his early paintings and text-based works through to the iconic neon sculptures that made him famous.

Today, while living with motor neurone disease, Hartigan continues to create. Looking through Hartigan's work, you begin to understand why he sees neon in a sunset. Recent works transform everyday objects into vessels of memory and connection, continuing a career-long fascination with how ordinary materials can be elevated into something extraordinary.

We're proud to have a small selection of Paul Hartigan's works available at Paper-Works Gallery. Visit the gallery to discover the work of an artist who finds new ways to see the world.

The camera doesnโ€™t lie. But it does choose sides.

Photographer, writer, operator of many levers, Simon Shattky is less interested in the obvious shot and more in what sits just off to the edge of it. Youโ€™ll recognise his eye from pages of BayBuzz where image and text work together, each sharpening the other.

His practice moves between storytelling and observation, often landing somewhere wry, human, and quietly exacting. His approach? Not everything needs to be overworked or over-explained. As heโ€™s written elsewhere, sometimes the smartest move is knowing when to stop talking.
Because the first glance rarely tells the whole story.
