I always figured I’d be an abstract artist. I started out as an abstract artist. And have drifted that way on occasion. There’s a part of me that really likes the idea of intuitively mark making, splashing paint around and solving problems on the fly. Problem is, that’s not who I am at all 😂.

Instead it’s humans, the way we live and behave, the stories we create around our memories and what common ground we all have - that is the subject matter that has long captured and held my attention.

If I had to sum up my artwork in one sentence right now I would say “I use old, found photos to paint timeless stories”

These three paintings (Building Dreams, Unconditional Love & Mountain Air) are all available via T H E M A N D A R I N T R E E gallery in Gordonton. Each one is a small slice of NZ life from decades before.

I’m working from home again as the lurgy has been lingering in my household. Hopefully back at Villa Studios sometime next week to finish varnishing and framing some small artworks for the Tauranga Art Show as part of The Incubator group, packing pieces for The Baradene Art Show and cracking on with some new paintings.

Photo call 🙏Would you like to see a cherished memory become a painting? An old family photo brought to life on canvas?

I’m looking for reference photos - and your permission to use them commercially in my work. Any era - up until about 1985. Candid unposed pics are best - but I’ll always make exceptions for a cool pic. Black and white or colour, NZ or UK etc all good.

I never know what will connect me with a photo at the time that drives me to paint it, so can’t promise to use it right now. But I might in future as my work evolves. I do promise to treat the photos and people in them respectfully.

As you age, you become more aware of the cyclical nature of life. You have lived long enough to see the repeated patterns that appear in each generation. It makes me wonder why we seem incapable of learning more from the generations that have gone before us.

I remember when I was young, very old people made me nervous to be around. Their shaky hands and voices, deeply wrinkled skin and watery eyes - aging can be confronting. And who is sticking about to have a deep and meaningful conversation with their great, great granny when the sun is out and the playground is calling.

I wonder if it’s also form of protection. What youngster wants to discover that beyond the bells and whistles of your career, money and shiny toys - the quality of your life is likely to boil down to the same two things it always has. Your relationship to yourself, and your relationship with others.

That’s enough to pop any five-year-olds balloon.

Especially if you’re a five-year-old growing up in the 1970s who believes they are destined to marry a prince and live in castle. Although as it turns out, the reality of that scenario is less appealing these days.

I do wish I’d spent more time listening when I had the chance, but also sometimes you’re just not ready to receive the message and have to figure it out for yourself.

We all want to escape the rat race every once in a while. Go off grid. Be out of wifi range. Truth is that while being out in nature is good for the soul, it can require getting ok with a little discomfort. We’ve had plenty of rubbish nights sleep while camping, even now that we’ve upgraded from tents with the kids to a motor home. The same might be said of sailing. Amazing and exhilarating, but comes with its own discomfort. I’ve heard it called a ‘paradise tax’ and I think that’s a pretty good way to describe it.

I found this old photo slide on eBay, and it made me think of the pay off between comfort and happiness I’ve experienced on family excursions, camping, hiking, kayaking etc. And that’s how this slightly fed up lady from long ago ended up in a painting I’ve called ‘Happy Camper’.

This small (12x16 inches plus frame) painting will be available at the Baradene Art Show. The next image has all the show details 👉

Curious to see inside my art studio? There’s always a lot going on that feeds into later work. Ideas roll around for months or years before I can see their influence appear on a canvas.
