পিতৃপক্ষের অবসানে, অমাবস্যার সীমানা ডিঙিয়ে আমরা যখন আলোকময় দেবীপক্ষের আগমনকে প্রত্যক্ষ করি, তখনই সেই মহালগ্নটি আমাদের জীবনে মহালয়ার বার্তা বহন করে আনে। এক্ষেত্রে স্বয়ং দেবীই হচ্ছেন সেই মহান আশ্রয়, তাই উত্তরণের লগ্নটির নাম মহালয়া। একটি অর্থ অনুসারে মহান আলয়টি হচ্ছে পিতৃলোক। আশ্বিন মাসে কৃষ্ণপক্ষের অবসান ও দেবীপক্ষের সূচনায় যে অমাবস্যাকে আমরা মহালয়া হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করি, সেই দিনটি হচ্ছে পিতৃপূজা ও মাতৃপূজার সন্ধিলগ্ন। পিতৃপূজা ও মাতৃপূজার মাধ্যমে এই দিনটিতে আমরা আমাদের এই মানব জীবনকে মহান করে তুলতে প্রয়াসী হই বলেই এই পূণ্যলগ্নটিকে মহালয়া বলা হয়।
মহালয়া এলেই বাংলার মাটি-নদী –আকাশ প্রস্তুত হয় মাতৃপূজার মহালগ্নকে বরণ করার জন্য। কাশফুল ফুটলে শরৎ আসে। মহালয়া এলেই দূর্গাপূজা এসে যায় । মহালয়া এলেই সেই দেবী-বন্দনার সুর ধ্বনিত হয় বাংলার হৃদয়ে। দূর থেকে ভেসে আসে ঢাকের আওয়াজ। বুকের মধ্যে জাগে আনন্দ-শিহরিত কম্পন, মা আসবেন।
Mahalaya is an auspicious day when the Pitri-Paksha ends and the Debi-Pakhsa begins. On this day, the hindus all over India pay homage to the ancestors. For the people of Bengal, the Mahalaya announces the Durga Puja, which will be just seven days away. As per the Purana, this day marks the creation of Goddess Durga who takes on the Demon Mahishasur in a battle of Good over Evil and finally destroys it.
It is a special ritual for the Bengalis, as on the day of Mahalaya, they wake up at 4 am and tune in to listen to Birendra Krishna Bhadra reciting the holy verses of 'Mahisasura Mardini over the radio. The holy verses in short narrates the story of the descent of Goddess Durga on earth.
