Our third Get Zapped Residency Artist to announce is Hayden Gundry:

Hayden Gundry is a New Zealand artist working primarily with wood, paint and carving. His practice combines elements of woodcut, painting and sculpture, using chisels, carving tools and a Dremel to build detailed, textured surfaces. He often works with figurative imagery, using strong contrasts and dramatic compositions to explore people, places and ideas. His process moves between drawing, painting and carving, allowing each stage to influence the next. Rather than treating these techniques separately, Gundry brings them together to create work where the physical process of carving remains visible and central to the finished piece.

Get Zapped Artist Residency is running September 5th - October 31st, followed by an exhibition of the three artists' work mid November.

Our second artist to announce for the 2026 Get Zapped Artist Residency is Robyn Glendinning:

Having grown up surrounded by nature and the eldest child of two horticulturists, Robyn Glendinning has always been fascinated by plants and nature. After graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee in 2016 with a BDes (Hons) specialising in Illustration. She then fell down the well-trodden path of corporate design for many years before realising that she needed to find her way back to illustration, storytelling and herself. A mixed-media artist, Robyn works with gouache, coloured pencil, natural materials, words and sound. Her most recent bodies of work are winding meditations on nature, folklore and how we talk to ourselves.

The Get Zapped 2026 Artist Residency begins tomorrow! After submitting exciting applications back in May, three artists were chosen by the panel and have been given studio spaces at Zappekin for the next 8 weeks, followed by an exhibition of the work they create. Our first artist to announce is Shelby Rusbatch:

Everything’s overly optimised. No space for interpretation. 22-year-old Nelson based artist Shelby Rusbatch confronts this in her work over various topics, including ‘The Grayining’ phenomenon: the trend of neutralizing everyday colors. This influences her material and colour choices, favouring vibrant colours and bold materials in her paintings and sculptures.

Learning to respect her differences with dyslexia revealed to Shelby a cultural fixation on maximising uniformity and practicality. This inspired her Bachelor of Arts and Media 2024 show title ‘Mis-Interpretation’ where she won the Top Student Award, and the Award of Distinction. Recently she’s engaged in various exhibitions, community arts projects and residencies around this topic.

IT IS ALMOST TIME! Important info below:

Bring cash as many of the artists have been dragged out from their artist lairs and don't have eftpos machines (some will also be able to accept bank transfers).

Free hot drink with entry ($5, eftpos available). Children under 12 free. This is a fundraising event, feel free to donate extra if you would like!

One of the artists is going to be printing people's clothing for them - don't forget to bring your light coloured tees, jeans, tote bags, tea towels etc and have them jazzed up for a small koha.

There is a stall for kids to decorate their own masks (gold coin).

We have parking in the orchard behind Zappekin as usual, please head to Zappekin to be directed by one of our lovely volunteer Parking Wizards. Our regular carpark is reserved for disabled parking, please tell the first Parking Wizard if you require this.

To get to Zappekin you can turn down either Wood Loop, or Weka Road and follow the road around. Weka Road has a turning lane if you are coming from Nelson.

You are welcome from 1-5pm (Sunday May 3rd)

Ana Solo runs Sugarcube Studios with her partner Danny, building digital spaces and branding. But when she steps away from the keyboard and into the quiet of her Tapawera studio, she happily trades pixels for things she can touch, feel, and get messy with, embracing a world where there is no "Undo" button.

Ana's art is born out of her love for the natural world. At the market, she will be offering illustrative sun-printed cyanotypes, unique papercut jelly prints, and her classic screenprints. It’s been ages since she last emerged from her studio to sell at a market, so she hopes you'll stop by, say hi, and ask about her sun-printing process, if only to remind her how to socialise in person. :-)
