The Nelson Roller Sports Club skating rink in Tāhunanui reopens for public use this Friday from 6:30-8:30pm after a floor upgrade over summer.

I’m pictured signing the new ground lease with Tāhunanui Liaison Councillor Campbell Rollo and Club President Alethea Stove, who heads up a membership of about 200. The lease is for an additional 10 years at a discounted community rate.

Since its humble beginnings in the 1950s, new buildings and extensions have been added to the rink including tiered seating, a refreshment shop, skate hire/repair shop, dressing room, ticket box and a fence.

A roof was installed over the rink in 1983 and in 1986 the sides were enclosed. New seating was installed in 2001, and the rink was resurfaced with a specialised epoxy for smoother rolling and a better grip. New toilets were built in 2024, a new forecourt in 2025 and the floor was repainted over the past summer.

Our Nelson rink is considered one of the best training facilities in New Zealand. Roller skating was hugely popular throughout the world in the 1970s and 80s. It grew again with the advent of roller derby in the 2010s.

The Nelson Roller Sports Club is primarily as a sports club for the various codes including artistic, inline hockey, speed skating and roller derby, but it also runs a popular public facility for skating, discos and private functions.
