These wonderful shows have been all about connection: with stories present and past, with people over time and geography, with friends new and old.

Taranaki Maunga, astrology, our natural environment and the power of words have been the topics of many a conversation - and like all good shows, these two have prompted wide-ranging kōrero.

Polly Cleverley ‘Lie of the Land’ and
Lesley Dowding and Margaret Scott ‘Midnight at the Lighthouse’ close this Sunday (30 August) at 3pm.

Language, literature and storytelling are at the forefront of both our current exhibitions.

Polly Cleverley weaves narrative into her paintings as figures appear and recede, and text is overlaid to add another dimension to the stories told, concealed and revealed.
Margaret Scott also includes passages of text in her paintings, that sit in and peek through the landscape that has many tales of its own.
Lesley Dowding’s words arrive via the storybook and the sharing of that book out loud to children who then enact that in dance, play and drawing.

‘Lie of the Land’ and ‘Midnight at the Lighthouse’ are on until Sunday 30 August.

On Friday we gave the warmest and happiest of welcomes to Polly Cleverley’s ‘Lie of the Land’ and Lesley Dowding and Margaret Scott’s ‘Midnight at the Lighthouse’.

Friends and whānau raised a glass to the artists and we were thrilled to host two particularly special guests - Thomas and Aunt Jenny from the book!

These shows run until Sunday 30 August and are not to be missed.

Last Thursday we had a visit from Little Steps daycare - a group of awesome four-year-olds and their kaiako.
They toured the show, listened attentively as Lesley Dowding read them ‘Midnight at the Lighthouse’, coloured and danced, then moved through to Polly Cleverley’s exhibition to find faces in the paintings and ask the most insightful questions.

Galleries come alive with visitors, particularly tamariki ✨✨
Would your school or group like a storytime with Lesley? We’d love to host you. Contact the Gallery to make a booking!
