A little reminder that artists rarely work on just one thing at a time!

I started this painting back in April, and although it's still not finished, that doesn't mean I've stopped creating. Behind the scenes, I've been making jewellery, working as an archive intern, researching for another creative project, and saying yes to new opportunities along the way.

Art isn't always a straight line from start to finish. Sometimes one project needs to rest while another takes shape. Creativity flows between different ideas, mediums, and experiences, with each one feeding into the next.

So here's a little process photo of this painting that's still a work in progress. It's a reminder that creating isn't about rushing, it's about balancing many projects, following inspiration, and trusting that each piece will be completed in its own time.

The artist's life is often a juggling act, and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way!

A new painting begins in layers..

Each mark holds something - memory, feeling, whakapapa. Some parts stay visible, others are covered, but never lost. That’s how my practice works too; building, hiding, revealing.

More to come 🤍..

Kia ora koutou katoa 🤍..

I’ve noticed a few new faces here, so I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Miria, and I’m a Māori artist working across contemporary practice, with a strong foundation in mahi raranga and taonga-making. My mahi is grounded in storytelling, whakapapa, and pattern - often inspired by lived experience, memory, and the people who have shaped me.

You’ll see a mix of things here - from handwoven pieces and jewellery, to exhibition work, process videos, and moments from behind the scenes as I continue to grow my practice.

For me, art is more than just making - it’s healing, connection, and a way of carrying stories forward.

Ngā mihi for being here and supporting my journey, it truly means a lot 🤍..

Updates from my open studios project..

It's been a journey! In the time spent so far, I've made over 100 pairs earrings and gifted a few, assisted/taught whānau, friends and the community in making over 75+ pairs of earrings, I've constructed a poem and designed a photographic digital artwork!

I've been amongst some awesome artists who gave great feedback, the staff at The Arts Village are so inspiring and supportive of us all and I'm grateful to be a part of this residency.

Our final showcase is this Friday 16th January, 6pm at The Arts Village in Rotirua.

Nau mai, haere mai e te iwi!
