I tāreia tēnei patu parāoa mō hei whakamana i ōna kāwai rangatira o Ngāti Maniapoto, o Ngāi Tahu, o Te Rarawa anō hoki. Ko te ingoa o te patu ko ‘Niwa’.

I whakairotia tēnei wahaika parāoa mō hei whakamana i ōna hononga whakapapa ki Takapau me te Wairarapa. Ko tōna ingoa ko ‘Tūtarakauika’. Tokorua o ōna tīpuna i whakairohia atu, arā, Ko Whangataua kei tōna upokohou, ko Te Korou kei tōna rau.

A Ngāti Pikiao inspired Tekoteko I Completed back In 2023 at The New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts institute

During my time as a Matanga Whakairo we were given an opportunity to carve whatever we wanted as professional development, at the time I already had this piece in mind I had wanted to create for some time.

This piece was special to me as it allowed me to explore traditional forms of my own unexplored whakapapa

As you can see it is not an exact replica; the goal is not to directly copy someone else’s work, but rather to Capture the essence and understand the processes they took to achieve their vision

Ngāti Pikiao were renowned Carvers, hence I chose to replace the Wahaika in hand with a Chisel and Mallet (Kuru me te Whao), paying homage back to their mahi pūkenga Whakairo

'Taiaha' - Traditional Fighting Staff

Taiaha were traditionally wielded by the prominent warriors of the tribe. Accompanied by its own unique hand to hand fighting styles, the Taiaha when used in the correct manner, is a tool designed for devistation.

In most cases 'Taiaha' were uniquely crafted for its owner, and embellished with an ancestral name of his/her Whakapapa (Heritage), making them a family heirloom to be handed down for generations.

After a Taiaha was made, the Wood was then Tempered through repetative process of burnishing with Earth, Fire until It was as hard as steel. The Taiaha gained itself a reputation for breaking British Swords.
