Kia ora e te whānau and friends!
Last week I made my first little short love ditty, inspired by the E Tū Whānau song competition themed 'My Whānau My Future'!
After reading that entries won't be judged on quality of production, I gathered the confidence and made time for Bandlab and Ableton Live Lite! Made in few days around mahi māmā and reo class! It's a work in progress!
Ka Mua Ka Muri, is a Māori whakataukī / proverb which loosely translates to walking backwards into the future, said to me by a Rongowhakaata kaumātua some 10years ago, which was confronting at the time when singled out amongst my artist peers, though once considered, comforted me in the knowing, it aligns with my passion, purpose and path as a maker who looks to history to explore, create presently, inform and educate currently, for the future.
For this comp, I looked to our tupuna Ngātata-i-te-rangi, whom, I have read, when our hapū Ngāti Te Whiti of Te Ātiawa were surrounded by war, composed a tau, a lay, 'Te Tau a Ngātata', and went alone to Te Wherowhero in Waikato to sing and ask for support, ultimately to secure peace, by way of utu. Out of the 28 lines of lyrics, waiho atu riri, waiho atu nguha, no desire for battle, no desire to fight, resonated with me with consideration to E Tū Whānau values and kaupapa of violence free future.
Ka Mua Ka Muri nā Skyla Love
Waiho atu riri / no desire for battle
Waiho atu nguha / no desire to fight
Rongo whakairi / peace elevate
Maiangi i te ruha / rise from the exhaustion
Nei rā te aroha / this here love
E horahia / spread
Aroha / love
Ahakoa / although
Kua tiriwā / seperate
Aroha / love
Ahatia / despite
Whīwhiwhia / complexities
Aroha / love
Ahatia / although
Mānakanaka / anxious
Aroha / love
Waiho atu riri / no desire for battle
Waiho atu nguha / no desire to fight
Rongo whakairi / peace elevate
Maiangi i te ruha / rise up from the fatigue
Nei rā te aroha / love
E horahia / spread
Ka mua ka muri / past informs future, back informs front
Nei te ruriruri / this short love ditty
Ki.a Hiwa rā / to Hiwa(i te rangi), get ready
The last three lines are a play on words about what this ditty does looking back to inform the present and future, being alert in these political time's and as we approach Matariki it sings to Hiwa-i-terangi the star we cast our intensions to, and to get ready.
If you have time to have a listen and vote for people's choice award, not only could you win $150, also I may win one of the 5 prizes in the over 19s category. Any funds received will be re-purposed to developing my music!
