Seasons change. So do we.

If you've walked past the studio lately, you'll have noticed the autumn colours doing their thing outside our windows. Fitting, really.

Fold Studio & Gallery is closing its Rangiora doors. It's been a year of making, showing, connecting, and building something we're genuinely proud of...and now we're moving into a different season.

Not an ending...just a transition.

The dream that started Fold - shared creative practice, community connection, diverse exhibition opportunities, and making the arts genuinely accessible in Waimakariri - that doesn't close with the lease.

We're going into winter hibernation while exploring what evolution looks like. But the kaupapa is very much alive.

If you've been part of Fold in any way - as an artist, an exhibitor, a visitor, a supporter - thank you. You're the reason the idea is worth continuing.

Follow along. Spring has a habit of arriving. đŸ‚đŸŒ±

Final day of Signature. If you haven’t made it through yet, this is your window.

It’s been a privilege to share the space with this group over the past few months...watching the work evolve, conversations unfold, and the studio do what it does best.

Thanks to everyone who’s come through, spent time with the work, and backed the artists. That support matters more than you think.

Fold doesn’t sit still for long. More evloution to come.

Micro Residency Artist Spotlight: Sarah Fisk

“It doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to exist.”

For Sarah, this residency marked a return.

After recently losing her father, painting felt distant and hard to reach. Joining the residency created a reason to begin again. A small but steady step back into making.

Her work centres around portraits. She is drawn to faces, to the human form, to the quiet complexity held in expression. There’s something both personal and open in that space, where meaning shifts between artist and viewer. Each person sees something different. Each connection is its own.

Before she starts, she looks outward - scrolling through other artists’ work, letting that spark build. Then it’s brushes, paint, masking fluid, fine lines...and focus.

The studio has played its part too, in a room full of people deeply engaged in their own practice. That shared energy, quiet but present, becoming a kind of momentum.

Right now, her practice sits in mystical, feminine, rebirth.

And from here, something new is unfolding! Sarah is beginning to explore animation, opening up another way for her work to move, evolve, and carry forward into the next chapter, where her work won’t sit still...it will move!

Micro Residency Artist Spotlight: Andrea Allott

“What if?”

It’s a small question, but it’s driving everything.

Andrea’s practice is grounded in experimentation...following colour, testing materials, and staying open to surprise. Right now, she’s leaning into high flow acrylics, letting them move freely and seeing what emerges.

This residency has been about structure as much as freedom. Finding rhythm. Managing time. Making space to show up consistently.

There’s something ritualistic in the act too - putting on the apron, stepping into the work. A signal that it’s time to begin (and permission to get a little messy along the way).

Her practice is rooted in experimentation, colour, and bliss. The studio is a space where she feels most herself. Outside the studio, that same energy carries through her garden, in nature, in the quiet influence of things growing.

This residency arrived as a gentle push, a moment to commit more fully, and to follow that question a little further:

What if?

📣 Exhibition opening soon!! 📣

Opening Night: Thursday 9 April, 6pm (refreshments provided)
Exhibition Dates: 9–22 April
Gallery hours: 9am-3pm weekdays, 10am-4pm weekend

Don't forget to add this to your calendar!

Signature brings together the work created during this year’s Fold micro-residency - a short, intensive window where artists are given time, space, and support to follow the threads of their practice wherever they lead.

Across the gallery, you’ll see each artist explore ideas, gestures, and techniques that feel unmistakably their own. The show celebrates what rises to the surface when creatives are trusted to explore: emerging styles, sharpened intentions, and the small but significant marks that define a practice.

Join us for opening night to experience the work fresh from the studio and meet the artists behind it. The exhibition runs through to 22 April during regular gallery hours.
