Kaiapoi Entrance Sign Artistic Cutout – Call for Expressions of Interest

The Kaiapoi Tuahiwi Community Board has approved the design of a new sign for the entrance to Kaiapoi on Main North Road. The concept for the overall sign was chosen to reflect the strong relationship that Kaiapoi Town has with the Kaiapoi River and will feature a base constructed of upright recycled wharf timber with Corten steel panel mounted on the front of the timber, complemented by steel lettering that reads ‘Welcome to Kaiapoi’.

The Waimakariri District Council with the support of the Waimakariri Public Arts Trust is seeking an artist to create a graphic design for inclusion on the Corten steel panel. The cut-out design should be unique to Kaiapoi and seek to reflect some aspect of Kaiapoi’s unique history, culture, ecology, context, character or people. The project provides an opportunity for skilled and experienced artist/s to make their mark on Kaiapoi by having their work potentially selected and permanently exhibited as part of the Main North Road Kaiapoi Entrance Sign.

Submissions are due: 31st October 2025

KAIAPOI BRIDGE RENOVATION.
The iconic bridge on Williams Street in Kaiapoi is set for an upgrade thanks to a generous local.

Council staff have been investigating options to replace the balustrade after an engineering assessment found the barriers were no longer fit for purpose.

This project is a call for expressions of interests from suitably qualified designers/artists to provide design for elements of the soon to be upgraded Kaiapoi Bridge Balustrades and side panels.
