Astor Bristed Gallery

Astor Bristed Gallery Astor Bristed is an art gallery in Arrowtown that holds exhibitions for vibrant New Zealand artists.

Our first exhibiton of spring opens on September 17 with Wellington artist, Kerrie Hughes.

“The scale of the paintings is large so as to act as an atmospheric backdrop for the people in front of them. They encompass and immerse the viewer in a calming, otherworldly space, like a “green room” or a bower. I see them as portable murals.”

Before becoming a painter, Kerrie had a successful career in fashion design in New Zealand and London.

Vase from Audrey’s grandparents’, Ted and Colleen Hill.

One of three new paintings by Fergus Robertson.

Ferg is a self-taught artist living in Canterbury, New Zealand. He paints still life scenes in oils, housed in steel frames welded in his studio. He is often drawn to paint vases or vessels that are reminiscent of other eras, and those which represent people close to him.

Ferg has had three solo exhibitions with Astor Bristed, the most recent at the Aotearoa Art Fair in May 2026.

For more information on Ferg’s practice, please get in touch or register your interest via the contact page on our website.

Our first exhibition of spring opens on September 17 with Wellington artist, Kerrie Hughes.

“The first tapestry room I painted was our London bedroom. Living in the East End of London, I craved nature. When visiting manor houses in Britain I would sometimes come across tapestry rooms, and very occasionally “painted cloths” which imitated tapestry – a poor man’s version. I was particularly inspired by Eyam Hall in Derbyshire, where the main room was covered with patched-together tapestries. Every so often there would be an upside-down head or hand depicted – it was surreal and random. The rooms gave me conflicting feelings of excitement and serenity. They were thrilling spaces, refuges of idealised nature, private paradises”.

Opening: September 17, 6.00pm.
All welcome.

Fergus Robertson is an artist based in North Canterbury, New Zealand.

He has painted pets and other objects, though his main focus is flowers in interesting vessels. Each vase and selection of flowers has a story - one of Ferg’s friends may have gifted him the flowers, and the vase might have been dug up in his neighbour’s garden.

We are looking forward to exhibiting him at the Aotearoa Art Fair next week.

Afternoon with Ferg ahead of the Aotearoa Art Fair.

Ferg is entirely self taught. At the time of his first exhibition with Astor Bristed (Feb 2024), he was working as a butcher. He is now working as a full-time artist, enjoying occasional catering jobs.
This will be his third solo exhibition with Astor Bristed.
