Get Outside provides a specialist landscape architecture service for children's play spaces in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our designs respond to the unique environment and kaupapa of each place and community we work with including early childhood centres, schools, local authorities, local iwi and whānau, creating landscapes and gardens for people of all ages to enjoy living and playing in. We offer a full landscape design service from concept design to detailed documents to overseeing the implementation of our plans.

Lovely finish to the Show.
Plants had all survived the wind.
The sun came out to light up the hessian panels...
and then a rainbow shone its blessing as we all headed home.

Last chance to see our garden 'Whiria" (to weave) at the Home Show today before it all gets packed down. Just delightful seeing the tamariki enjoying the water, the tunnel, the little bridge, and so many curious comments about our woven hessian panels!
Inspired by the practice of basket weaving its about connection, weaving our different cultures in Aotearoa together with the place we live.
A very NZ garden using natural materials and a variety of plants that remind us of the NZ bush and Grandmas garden :).

We decided to call the garden "Whiria", meaning to weave...weaving together our ideas and building relationships as we design a garden...about weaving together ideas and building relationships!

Loving the process and the collaboration as much as the outcome!

The garden is being constructed by Parrot Landscapes. Come and see it at the Auckland Home Show, Thurs Sept 10 to Sun Sept 14 at the Auckland Showgrounds.

Was invited to design a garden for this year's inaugural Auckland Garden Show at the Auckland Home Show. Short time frame but exciting opportunity!
Wanted to tell a story about how our different cultures in Aotearoa are woven together. So I invited two of my talented Māori ex-students from Wintec, Milly Ruru and Meretuahiahi Watene Ward , now capable landscape designers in their own right, to work with me to develop my initial ideas. Excited about where it has landed!

Much as I loved teaching, my students and my peers at Wintec, its great to be back transforming spaces again!
Enjoying the creative process, from brainstorming and sketching, to CADing and detailing, to guiding the build and the planting...very satisfying, working with others to turn this drab, dark, chewing gum-plastered “barn” at Papakura High School into a cheerful and colourful social space where the students can enjoy their kai.

Our design evokes the portage this area once was, for the exchange of supplies between hapū of the Manukau Harbour and the Hunuas through river and wetland. Here the fertile soil also enabled the growing of crops for iwi, providing nourishment to the early settlers of Auckland.
Appropriate for this to be a dining area, a source of ora and inspiration for the young tauira of this fabulous kura/school!

Fun time last week being gardener for a couple of days in the garden we designed for Papakura High School, getting it all ready for the start of the new term. Plants are flourishing from all that summer rain! Reckon every designer should get their hands in the dirt and spend time at the local plant nurseries on a regular basis. Good for the soul....
