'Moody Tairua'

Still trawling through some older shots and came across this one from the north end of Tairua Beach, taken back in 2018. I was out on the rocks looking north, and the sea spray drifted through the air, giving the whole scene a misty, moody atmosphere. The slow shutter softened the water into a silky, dreamlike texture that really captures the feel of that coastline.

‘Remarkable’
Back in ’23 on our last visit to Queenstown, the camera was put to good use. I captured this shot as the sun was going down, lighting up Kelvin Heights and the Remarkables in that late‑day glow.

'Splash'

I captured this shot at the South End a few years back — one of those moments where timing is everything. A large wave slammed into the rocks right in front of me, and I was lucky I didn’t get drenched. The energy, the noise, and that sudden burst of white water made the whole scene come alive.

Still one of my favourite “blink-and-you-miss-it” captures from this coastline.

'The Rock' – Puketui Valley

Shot in 2020 in the Puketui Valley near Frog Rock, this long‑exposure image captures the way flowing water wraps around the boulder in a smooth, almost mist‑like motion. The technique reveals the texture, shape, and presence of the rock while the water becomes a soft, continuous veil. A simple composition, but a beautifully atmospheric moment from the valley.

“Spiral Above Mount Nui'

This is a partial star‑trail shot from back in 2022. The long exposure reveals the different colours of the stars as they move across the sky. At the upper right of the image you can see the South Celestial Pole — the point on the Earth’s axis that the stars rotate around. Over a long exposure, that central point remains still while the rest of the sky forms circular trails around it.”

'The Star Needle'

While staying in Tairua last year, I headed down to the main beach for a morning shoot — and there it was, the Needle sitting quietly on the horizon. It’s one of those landmarks that always feels a little mystical, especially when the light softens and the ocean starts to glow.

Amazing how a simple shape in the distance can anchor an entire scene.

'Amidst the Boulders'

A Christchurch photographer messaged me while holidaying in Pauanui, so we met for a coffee yesterday and lined up a dawn shoot at Flat Rock/Boulder Bay. Justin Marshall was instantly captivated by the place — the rugged boulders, the sweep of the bay, and that unmistakable Flatrock atmosphere. Always great meeting someone who sees the landscape the way you do.

This image is a 30‑second long exposure, shot with my NiSi filter kit: a 6‑stop ND for motion control, a reverse grad to pull those deep tones out of the sky, and a soft grad inverted to balance the foreground light. It’s been a while since I’ve photographed Boulder Bay, but the moment reminded me why it’s one of my favourite spots — the textures, the mood, and the way the water wraps around the rocks make it a perfect long‑exposure playground.

'Moody Bay'

Still trawling through some older shots — this one’s from 2020, not long after lockdown. I was on my way out to Flat Rock to photograph Bevan on his foil in the massive swell, and Pauanui Beach was wrapped in this beautiful mist of sea spray. It created a moody, atmospheric scene that worked perfectly for a black‑and‑white treatment.

'Orange Glow'

Just been trolling through some older shots and found this one from 2019. There’s something about those deep orange sunsets that never gets old — warm, calm, and absolutely glowing. Still love this moment.

'Spiralling Over Paku '

While revisiting older work, I rediscovered this long exposure from December 2018. On my way home from Hahei, I paused at Tairua just after 9.30pm and set up on the main beach facing Paku.
This 969 seconds long exposure, the stars carved slow spirals across the sky, while the lights on Paku shimmered over the water. Standing on the rocks at the north end, the atmosphere was unforgettable — a moment I’m ready to recreate.
