Tērā Puanga ka rewa i te pae. Nau mai, haere mai te hua o te tau hou ki runga o Parihaka.

He pānui tēnei mai i ngā whare e toru o Parihaka ki ngā whanaunga me ngā piringa karanga maha o Parihaka mō Puanga Kairau 2026.

Our Puanga Kairau kaupapa will be held on Saturday 13 June 2026. We want to let you know that while the infrastructure works are coming to conclusion, the whenua is still not able to sustain huge numbers. The grass seed is fresh and we need to allow it to strengthen.

Therefore, this year we ask respectfully that only Parihaka haukāinga and whānau participate in Puanga Kairau. This is especially important because we will be carrying out two other ceremonies.

One of these kaupapa is our working together to close Te Paepae o Te Raukura for its planned major redevelopment. Nau mai haere mai e ngā whānau o Te Paepae ki tēnei mahi nui, mo te āpōpōtanga o Parihaka. The other kaupapa matua is to formally reopen the papakāinga after significant infrastructure works over the past two years.

We are currently finalising the ritenga for these important processes. No reira, ko te haere tahi, te mahi tahi me te tū tahi. We are really looking forward to Puanga Kairau 2027 and inviting you all to celebrate with us.

Over the last week, the Parihaka māra whānau have been harvesting all the kūmara at Parihaka and Ahuahu. At Parihaka, it was the tamaraki from Te Kura o Ngāruahinerangi who planted the tipu in early summer and then came back to harvest. Grown in a māra dedicated to language revitalisation, these kūmara have only ever heard te reo Māori being spoken around them. We think it makes them taste extra reka :-)
At Ahuahu, we were joined by students from six schools working with Te Ara Taiao helping with the harvest yesterday: Te Pi'ipi'inga Kākano Mai i Rangiātea, Ōmata School, Oakura School, Devon Intermediate, Rahotu Primary and Spotswood College, as well as our Kai Oranga tauira who are studying through Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and hapū and community members. With dozens of people helping out, we were done with the harvesting of 18 rows by lunchtime on a beautiful sunny day.
This is a 10-year collaboration between the Marshall Family, the Parihaka māra and Tāwhirikura hapū members. About 40 bags of kūmara 'seconds' went home with the harvesters while the remainder are now curing at Parihaka for a few days before being stored for winter

Our pā maara and Wao Kairau o Rata foodforest at Parihaka, the Tāhekenui maara down the road in Pungarehu and a home maara and food forest nearby are now growing far more food than we can distribute from the pataka kai and koha to the marae and events like Tiripoua. We so have partnered with On The House to get the kai to more homes across Taranaki.

On The House have been running for 9 years out of Ngāmotu rescuing kai and now collect, box and deliver kai to foodbanks, night shelters, pataka kai, free stores and elderly across the whole region. They are AMAAAZING and we are very proud to support their kaupapa. Noone should go hungry, ever. If you need kai, please find them and take whatever you need.

Huge mihi to the Kai Oranga tauira with Te Awanuiārangi, the kids at Rāhotu and Spotswood schools and everyone else who helped plant the trees and seedlings, w**d and feed the maara and harvest this kai.
