For those who don’t know I own Kapiti’s only music store, currently called The Family Music Store.
I’ve been a part owner since the start of this recession… nearly 2 years ago, which is a crazy idea really.
I then inherited more of the thing around a year ago and am now the majority owner, and I’ve been keeping it afloat personally. Retail is tough right now. The new stories about Wellington are for real.
I’d love to keep a music store in Kapiti, I’m actually quite passionate about it. I don’t make any money from it personally, but it does employee a bunch of our local musicians and makes it easy for me and my students to get gear.
I also think having a store locally, means it’s cheaper to get things as you don’t have to travel, it’s convenient to get things when you need it and it's a big support for our local music scene, it’s actually a core pillar I believe of what you need to sustain a music scene. So I’m all in and I’m about to rebrand this thing and give it one more big push.
But there’s a catch, it can’t keep costing me indefinitely. If there’s stacks of support for our little music store over the next month til the end of November I can keep the store running, but if we don’t get the sales then it might be that Kapiti doesn’t need or can’t support its own music store and actually that’s fair enough. We run a tight ship, but it’s tough out here, and people are strapped for cash, I get it, I’m strapped too.
So here the questions I need help answering...
Firstly what name?
Kapiti Music
or
Kapiti’s Magical Musical Emporium
Secondly do you want a music store here?
- If you’re going to buy something musical would you buy it from us, eould you support the shop?
If you don’t know, we can get in most kinds of things. What we have on the floor is more of a show room type deal. Somethings won’t fit in our space. We can get in massive PA systems, expensive orchestral instruments, fender anything, yamaha basses and keyboards, big Tama drum sets, electronic nux stuff, vox and lanely valve amps If you think of it we can get a cool version of it alongside all the beginner and intermediate stuff and it all comes covered with a nz warranty.
What do you all think out here, rebrand and give it one more big push? Are you with us?
