The Local Scene Kapiti

The Local Scene Kapiti The Local Scene is about giving a stage to Kapiti’s talented songwriters and musicians.

It’s primary role is to create gigs and opportunities for local musicians to get paid and to develop as artists.

For those who don’t know I own Kapiti’s only music store, currently called The Family Music Store.
I’ve been a part owner since the start of this recession… nearly 2 years ago, which is a crazy idea really.
I then inherited more of the thing around a year ago and am now the majority owner, and I’ve been keeping it afloat personally. Retail is tough right now. The new stories about Wellington are for real.

I’d love to keep a music store in Kapiti, I’m actually quite passionate about it. I don’t make any money from it personally, but it does employee a bunch of our local musicians and makes it easy for me and my students to get gear.
I also think having a store locally, means it’s cheaper to get things as you don’t have to travel, it’s convenient to get things when you need it and it's a big support for our local music scene, it’s actually a core pillar I believe of what you need to sustain a music scene. So I’m all in and I’m about to rebrand this thing and give it one more big push.

But there’s a catch, it can’t keep costing me indefinitely. If there’s stacks of support for our little music store over the next month til the end of November I can keep the store running, but if we don’t get the sales then it might be that Kapiti doesn’t need or can’t support its own music store and actually that’s fair enough. We run a tight ship, but it’s tough out here, and people are strapped for cash, I get it, I’m strapped too.

So here the questions I need help answering...

Firstly what name?

Kapiti Music
or
Kapiti’s Magical Musical Emporium

Secondly do you want a music store here?
- If you’re going to buy something musical would you buy it from us, eould you support the shop?

If you don’t know, we can get in most kinds of things. What we have on the floor is more of a show room type deal. Somethings won’t fit in our space. We can get in massive PA systems, expensive orchestral instruments, fender anything, yamaha basses and keyboards, big Tama drum sets, electronic nux stuff, vox and lanely valve amps If you think of it we can get a cool version of it alongside all the beginner and intermediate stuff and it all comes covered with a nz warranty.

What do you all think out here, rebrand and give it one more big push? Are you with us?

Here's a cool thing. Many of these artists have graced our stage and quite a few of the photos were taken at our gigs. Go along to Kiwibank (exhibiting now) and grab yourself a band tee or CD and get a piece of History. Photo's from our last gig dropping soon...

We're looking for performers for the 15th and 16th of May for the next local scene at Tuatara Tap Room on the 15th and 16th of May. This time around it's a 2 day event celebrating music month. Saturday 2-10pm and Sunday 2-7pm.

Application form here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nkm1yyrlobrmc4x/The%20Local%20Scene%20Application%20Form.pdf?dl=0
Deadline is the 11th of April.

The deal:
Sound/ lights/ promo/ organisation/ tent/ stage and some sweet photos of your set are provided. What ever tickets you sell, you keep the dollars (at $10 a ticket) and you get a split of the door take ($15) too + whatever merch you sell. No costs and all gain.

We're looking for acts we can promote, so already having audio and social media up and running are a big +, I also prefer local though I'm open to some out of town acts this time too...

Email AJ at [email protected] for any questions and to get your application in.

What an awesome Valentines Day gig yesterday at Marine Gardens. Beautiful vibe and so nice to see a diverse cross section of Kapiti there, kids swinging in the trees/playground, young families everywhere and picnicing couples. Aroha to you all. Thanks for coming and supporting our local musicians with James & Tui, Bluesette and Ella May. Put on by The Local Scene Kapiti, Creative Kapiti, Kāpiti Coast District Council and Island Audio.
