Our friends at Capital Choir have a concert coming up on 27 June in Wellington.

Music Across Time features Bob Chilcott's Dances of Time alongside works by Henry Purcell, George Gershwin, Orlando Gibbons, Ola Gjeilo and composers from Aotearoa, Europe and North America.

(We'll be singing with Capital Choir later this year in Mozart's Requiem.)

The Kāpiti Choral Festival is coming to Te Raukura on 3–4 July.

It brings together choirs, workshops, mass choir singing, and a gala concert. You don’t need to belong to a choir to take part, and all music and learning tracks are provided.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to sing in a choir, this could be a great way to give it a try.

Want to join us for the workshops and mass choir singing? No experience is necessary, music and learning tracks are provided and only $20 to register for the full Friday and Saturday experience as well as a seat at the Gala concert! And you don't have to be part of a choir to come!

Congratulations to Mary Gow on being awarded the King’s Service Medal for services to music!

A fitting honour for someone who has brought so much music to our communities. Tomorrow’s Mulled Wine Concert features pianist Nikolai Saratovsky, one of the many outstanding musicians Mary has introduced to New Zealand audiences.

Mulled Wine Concerts is pleased to announce that our organizer, Mrs Mary Gow has - in the King’s Birthday New Zealand Honours List announced today - been awarded the King’s Service Medal (KSM) for her services to music.

Mrs Mary Gow is a concert pianist who holds BA and BMus degrees from Victoria University of Wellington. She is the organiser of the Mulled Wine Concerts, a group which has the objective of bringing classical and jazz music to audiences in Kapiti, Marlborough and the Wairarapa and encouraging young people to participate and enjoy this music. Since 2006, Mulled Wine Concerts has organised 120 concerts featuring mainly classical and some jazz musicians. The concerts are widely advertised and much appreciated, since admission prices are kept as low as possible, enabling audiences to enjoy first rate music without the costs of attending events in the capital.

Mary Gow was born in Lower Hutt and attended St Oran's College. After completion of her degrees at Victoria University, she studied piano and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, later making her home in the Belgian capital where she had a successful career performing and teaching music. She continues to be responsible for putting on two important concerts there: the Brussels Carol Concert and a Children's Concert featuring The Snowman. Both events have for many years supported Belgian
medical charities. She returned to New Zealand in 2006 and now lives on the Kapiti Coast.

What a fantastic day at The Big Sing yesterday.

So many talented young singers, dedicated music teachers and enthusiastic choirs all sharing their music. If yesterday was any indication, the future of choral singing in New Zealand is in very good hands!

Our new singing session began last Monday, but there’s still time to join us.

We’re currently rehearsing a programme of American art songs and contemporary choral works, with Robert Frost’s poetry-inspired Frostiana by Randall Thompson at its heart.

The programme also features music by Lauridsen, Whitacre, Copland, Barber, Elaine Hagenberg, Jennifer Higdon, and Stroope.

If you’ve been thinking about singing with a choir, this is a great time to come along and give it a try.

What a wonderful concert weekend.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Bach’s Magnificat and Michael Haydn’s Requiem at St Paul’s Church on Sunday. It was a joy to perform this music to such a full and enthusiastic audience.

A special thank you to our soloists, orchestra, supporters, volunteers, and to Music Director Eric Sidoti for bringing the programme together.

And now, we look ahead to our next programme: American Art Songs, featuring Randall Thompson’s Frostiana.

Later in the year, in our September–December season, we’ll be performing Mozart’s Requiem. If you were intrigued by the connection between Michael Haydn’s Requiem and Mozart’s later work, you’ll be able to hear that connection for yourself.
