🎬The Doctor's Wife- Special Film Screening
Sunday 13 Sept, 7pm

✨Community screenings will take place all over Aotearoa New Zealand. Attendance is free. Koha received will go towards supporting NZ medical missions to Palestine and will fund further screenings.✨

“When you’re a heart surgeon, that’s what you do…
If you are his wife, you tag along and find something useful to do.”

After retiring from a distinguished career as a cardiac surgeon in New Zealand, Dr Alan Kerr led a Kiwi team to Gaza and the West Bank to operate on children with heart disease. What started as a two week visit became an enduring 20 year commitment to Palestine, involving 40 medical missions to Gaza and the West bank and hundreds of operations.

Dr Kerr recognised the need for, and was instrumental in the establishment of, an independent Palestinian cardiac unit. He trained the first Palestinian paediatric cardiac surgeon and has been recognised as the ‘Father of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery' in Palestine. However, he couldn't have achieved this on his own. His wife, Hazel Kerr, travelled with him - bringing a different kind of healing to the people she met in Palestine.

During September, New Zealand’s most celebrated piano trio (Amalia Hall, violin; Matthias Balzat, cello; Somi Kim, piano) will take to the road with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra violist Alexander McFarlane and double bassist Damien Eckersley in a tour with Chamber Music New Zealand, performing Schubert’s Trout Quintet.
Not often performed in Aotearoa because of the need for a larger ensemble, the light-hearted and melodic Trout Quintet is one of the most beloved works of chamber music.
Accompanying it is Gareth Farr’s Ahi (meaning Fire in te reo Māori), and Thousandth Orange for piano trio and viola by Pulitzer and Grammy-winning composer Caroline Shaw.
Shaw, a vocalist and violinist, is the youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music. The New York Times describes her approach to music as “audaciously uninhibited” and “based on joy, omnivorous curiosity and congeniality – even as her work challenges your expectations and takes you by surprise.”
This is a programme that brings the warmth of summer into the auditorium in preparation for longer days.
