We have many amazing artists here at George St Collective, and they all deserve more recognition. So starting from now we will be doing a regular feature on our artists to showcase them and their incredible work.
This month's artist feature is on Jude Dinsdale:
"The Healing Power of the Dot
Finding Calm in the Chaos: How Local Artisan Jude Dinsdale Redefines Retirement Through Art
After a demanding long career working on the frontlines of urgent care and GP practices, Jude faced a familiar question: what comes next? The answer arrived in the form of a simple toothpick, a dotting tool, a pile of small rocks and a passion for precision. Seeking both a fresh creative challenge and the warmth of family, Jude relocated from New Plymouth to Palmerston North 3 years ago. Today, this self-taught local artisan transforms ordinary beach and river stones into captivating, intricately detailed masterpieces that have quickly captured the hearts of the Manawatū community.
Jude’s distinctive style draws deep inspiration from ancient Mandala patterns and the meticulous technique of pointillism. However, the true magic lies in the balance between human touch and nature. "I like to leave part of the rock bare so its natural beauty shows," Jude explains. "My artistic license then creates whatever flows." This intuitive process ensures that no two pieces are ever alike, blending the raw, organic textures of landscapes, birds, and animals with vibrant, rhythmic geometry.
Jude’s work has become a true community collaboration, fuelled by the immense support of local residents who frequently bring in their own found stones to be personalised. Whether you are looking for a unique, grounding statement piece for your home or wish to commission a bespoke design on a sentimental stone, Jude’s art brings a sense of peace and mindfulness into any space. Not only rocks but dots have been know to escape onto other mediums.
