People’s Choice Award 💫

Thank you for visiting our recent Imprint exhibition at Square Edge Community Arts and for voting in the Gordon Harris The Art & Graphic Store People’s Choice Award.

The votes demonstrated how important a group exhibition is with different visitors connecting with a wide range of works across the show.

There were a number of very popular artists, but this year again there was one stand out artwork in the People’s Choice votes. For 2025 that work was Patrick Tyman’s ‘Tiger’. Congratulations Patrick! 🥂

Imprint: Contemporary NZ Printmakers Showcase 2025 closes this Saturday (24 May). Pop into Square Edge Community Arts and visit this year’s exhibition in the Main Gallery. There are 3 other fabulous exhibitions also showing, as well as the lovely Lightbox Gallery full of beautiful artworks.

Congratulations to the winner of our Curators Award for 2025 – Patrick Tyman for his work ‘Tiger’ 💫👏🥂

The complexity of Patrick’s work draws the viewer in, finding characters and narratives with the details of this piece. The heavy influence of his upbringing in both India and England is evident in the motifs, multiple layers of vibrant colour and details within his work.

In Patrick's own words “Individual expression is always the essence, where decorative impact, vigour, and visual energy create striking effects with heightened emotional intensity”

Congratulations to the winner of our Printmakers Award for 2025 – Gabrielle Fawkner for her work ‘Earth Mother – Papatūānuku’ 💫👏🥂

The Award was judged by Rose Bourke, Artistic Director at Square Edge Community Arts.

Rose told us:
‘This work captivated me from the very beginning and keeps pulling me back. The artist’s thoughtful material choices enhance the conceptual weight of the work – printing on harakeke paper with earth pigments suggests a strong sense of connection to both the whenua and to the artist’s own personal process. The focus on the Earth Mother, Papatūānuku, is simultaneously urgent and timeless, offering a reflective and grounded response to contemporary concerns.’

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who came along to our Opening Event yesterday –whānau, friends, supporters, PCANZ members, Square Edge artists and members, partner organisations and Imprint Artists. It was a fun event sharing skills, knowledge and love for the magical world of printmaking.

Special shout out to the artists running workshops and demonstrations through the afternoon – Hamish , Gabrielle, Nicki, Simon, Kirsty and Patrick. And massive thank you to Jolene, Rachel and Josef and Michelle who picked up loads of the logistics so I could keep across the whole event – I am immensely grateful. 🙏

The afternoon of workshops and demonstrations could not have been possible without the generous support of Creative Communities funding from – Thank you! 💚🙌

Just some of our talented printmakers who will be on hand tomorrow from 3pm to share their knowledge and skills through ‘Have-a-Go’ printmaking workshops, and printmaker demonstrations and talks.

Come along to our Opening Event on Saturday 10 May 2025 at Square Edge Community Arts. Celebrate Imprint 2025, enjoy a taste of the magical art form of printmaking and talk to printmakers about their work.

The workshops and demonstrations will be free to attend, thanks to generous Creative Communities funding from Palmerston North City Council and Creative New Zealand.

Following the workshops, artist talks and demonstrations there will be a Prizegiving Function to celebrate this year’s exhibition.
