Ko Whiri Tika Mai

Ko Whiri Tika Mai Te Whakataetae Kapa Haka ā-Rohe mō ngā Kura Tuatahi o Rangitāne (Manawatū, Horowhenua, Tararua). is open to other schools who wish to join, enhancing our unity.

Naming of our Kaupapa
Rangitāne kaumātua Wiremu Larkins Te Awe Awe & Charles Matenga were approached and gave the event its name.

“Ko Whiri Tika Mai”
The weaving or platting together of all schools within Manawatū, Horowhenua and Tararua, all moving forward in the same waka and in one direction. Ko ‘Whiri Tika Mai’ is the only primary and Intermediate regional kapa haka competition within Rangit

āne ki Manawatū. Therefore Ko Whiri Tika Mai is also a vehicle for promoting kapa haka development. Ko Whiri Tika Mai:
is an inclusive collective of each school and, at the same time, encourages their individuality to come through. The tohu is a visual representation of the two points mentioned above. It depicts a waka moving along, carrying the inaugural seven kura who were initially steering the waka, yet is opened ended, allowing others to come on board. The tohu was given to Ko Whiri Tika Mai by Rangitāne kaumātua, Manu Kawana.

We need 21 kapa, and registrations close on Monday, the 29th of June.

Registrations for Ko Whiri Tika Mai (our regional qualifier for Te Mana Kuratahi 2027) are officially closing soon, and we cannot accept any late entries!

Thanks to our latest registrations, we now have 13 kapa locked in. This means our rohe now officially qualifies 4 kapa for the National Te Mana Kuratahi festival!

However, we still need more. Our ultimate goal is to reach 21+ registered kapa so we can send 6 kura to represent us in Whāngārei next year!

Mōrena e te hapori.

On Wednesday, we found out that only 8 kapa were registered for the adult kapa haka regionals, meaning only 2 would qualify for Te Matatini. We are so grateful to the organising committee for agreeing to register another kapa ngahau at the last minute to help push 3 kapa through to Te Matatini.

If you are passionate about supporting all of our hard working kapa and are willing to stand with ‘Te Kapa Tautoko’ on Saturday, 18th of April, please email Lewis Karaitiana ([email protected])

You do not need to be an expert; this kapa is about coming together, having fun, and supporting the kaupapa. You can still perform with another kapa at Te Matatini if you get on stage.

The bracket is nice and easy; you do not have to be an expert. You can learn the waiata online, turn up on the day, and smash it.

Rangitāne upoko ki runga! Tautoko mai
