KARU O TE WHENUA

Fine Kete Whakairo by Sonia Snowden - Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Kuta.

Pattern design is one of Sonia’s super powers, weaving with 1-2mm wide whenu (Harakeke blades). Her technical expertise weaving Kete Whakairo has grown from strength to strength over the decades where she continues to innovate reversing repetitive patterns creating new abstract patterns that are not only striking but very bold.

As a long serving Raranga Tutor on many marae, Te Rourou Trust and Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki, Sonia Snowden has shared her knowledge of Te Whare Pora across generations of weavers. She is recognised and treasured as a master weaver, a symbol of Raranga Whatu excellence and grace.
Sonia has woven some of the finest high-quality tukutuku, whāriki and Fine Kete Whakairo. A significant body of tukutuku being the restoration of Rangiātea Church in Ōtaki. Much of Sonia’s Raranga is in private and public collections such as Te Papa, Te Manawa, other museums and iwi archives in Aotearoa.

In 2003 Sonia became a Toi Iho lifetime artist and is a member of Te Kāhui Whiritoi, a class of master Māori weavers.
In 2019 she was acknowledged as a recipient of the Ngā Tohu a Tā Kingi Ihaka Award by Creative New Zealand for her services and dedication to her arts practice.
Toi Matarau is honoured to have hosted Sonia alongside Pip Devonshire as the first recipients of Ngā Aho Whenua Weavers Residency in 2021. The residency program is an 18 month long initiative designed by Kaitiaki Toi and Curator Maakarita Paku, to support weavers full-time, to create new work, engage with other weavers and the community.

Fondly referred to as Aunty Son to many, Toi Matarau and the whānau at Māoriland are proud to celebrate her as our living treasure, kaumātua and Poutokomanawa alongside Darcy Nicholas. Their support, love and dedication is appreciated and sustains us.

NEW ARTIST:
NGĀ ROMA POA

Toi Taiao - Māori art inspired by our natural world in Kimihia Rangahaua!

Ngā Roma Poa - Te Āti Haunui a Pāpārangi, Ngāti Maniapoto, Te Whānau a Apanui
The revitalisation of traditional pigment dyeing from resources available in our regions has been emerging for some years now. Through Kōhanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa Māori, Māori Art Schools, Waka Kura around the country and Ngā Mahi o Te Wharepora these natural processes remain. Ngā Roma Poa is an artist exploring and innovating the possibilities creating new colour pallets that bring joy and fascination to arts practices of the 21st century. In this series, ‘Te Heke Ngahuru’ Ngā Roma has found her way of storytelling through whakapapa and connection to her awa.

Te Heke Ngahuru - the Autumn migration of Eels was a sign to store kai, such as tuna for sustenance in preparation for colder months approaching.
The material and handcrafted pigments used within these artworks acknowledge a wider story.

The Mānuka wood canvas pays homage to Te Pā Auroa (Eel weirs) that were designed to capture Tuna as sustenance for the hapū living along the riverbanks of Te Wainuiārua. The remnants of Te Pā Auroa are still visible today.
The pigments are handcrafted from earth and shells sourced from areas of freshwater and saltwater, signifying the migration journey of the Tuna between Te Moana Nui a Kiwa (Pacific Ocean) and Te Wainuiārua (Whanganui River).

Te Heke Ngahuru and Te Pā Auroa have become integral concepts in upholding the well-being of ‘Te Awa Tupua’ (Whanganui River Claims Settlement Act, 2017.

Raranga by TRACEY MORGAN

AHI KAA
Tracey Morgan is from Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga. An established, experienced Toi Iho artist who is focussed on customary weaving techniques. With a strong traditional foundation developed over many years, Tracey is a skilled innovative weaver. Her Kete Whakairo easily captures the attention of audiences because of the calibre and quality of her artistry.
One of the hallmarks of her weaving are the design of bold, repetitive patterns and colour combinations she selects to create a visual language that stands out.
‘Ahi Kaa’ is an acknowledgement of all the firekeepers keeping the home fires burning for whānau, hapū, iwi and their marae.

SOPHIA PARUN
Kāi Tahu, Croatian

Ārai Tahi’ is one of a pair of paintings. A series titled, ‘The Masks I Wear.’
One of Sophia’s favourite mediums is old school oil pastels layered over acrylic and is not afraid to up-cycle materials that may substitute as a canvas or a surface that can be re-purposed.
Her 2 dimensional works are a unique point of difference showcasing her style of paint application, composition and fluid forms which set her aside as an original and authentic artist.

IVORY THRONE

Sophia Parun is Kāi Tahu and Croatian, a multi-dimensional artist who paints and draws every day. She is an intuitive, expressive and flamboyant artist who works on multiple paintings simultaneously.
