Keno Sculpture Hosted by Brett Keno - Oamaru stone sculptor.....bringing stone to life. Brett has been carving in Limestone since January 2005. www.kenosculpture.co.nz

What started as a hobby turned into a full time job in May 2013.... and I'm loving it! Brett whakapapa’s to Ngaiterangi, Ngati Ranginui, and Ngai Tahu. His inspiration comes from the natural world around him and through his Maori heritage. Christine runs the business and produces her own style of carvings. Together they cater for local and international markets.

CONNECTION

This sculpture is about the love and connection of two people. The design on the front represents their children, partners, grandchildren and... future grandchildren. Their friends are important to them also, so a couple of the koru were assigned to them.

We delivered and, with the help of a very big digger, installed the sculpture onto a plinth. For them the planting around the sculpture is next. It's so awesome to work closely with a client to bring their vision to life.

KERERŪ PANEL INSTALLATION

We get such a buzz when someone buys our artwork, then takes it to the next level with installation.... and then shares photo with you.

This client worked with Trellis Direct, Paraparaumu, to create a very cool frame for this wall hung Kererū panel.

BIRDS & FEATHERS

Being in a gallery for 6 months has given me many opportunities to explore my love of birds. Rummaging for driftwood - it has to be the right piece! Getting the driftwood ready, sanding, varnishing. And then creating the bird/s that will make it pop. And the best part, someone falling in love with it and purchasing. These are a few examples that have been created.

The first two, and the feather, are available at Coastal Collectives Gallery, Coastlands Mall, Kāpiti Coast. Open 10am to 4pm daily.

SHELL

I love hearing the stories behind the sculptures I get to create. This one was very different... a shell as a wedding present for a couple who have a passion for the ocean.

THE TWIST.... the piece would be installed underwater, and the intention for it was to act as a small artificial reef as well as a sculpture.
A piece was broken off the base to hold the co-ordinates of the shell's location, and this was presented to them at the wedding. The idea being a location where they can visit while diving, perhaps once a year, as a kind of permanent marker of their marriage.

COLOUR

Sometimes the colour of the limestone just blows us away.

The darker layers are Ferrous Oxide in the salt water which gets trapped in the limestone as it forms. The limestone we source is dated between 35-40million years old.

CHATHAM ISLANDS

I was asked if I could create a chess piece as a memorial. It was for a young man who enjoyed many pursuits including a high degree of skill in chess. His favourite piece was the Bishop.

It was created in 2 pieces for easier transportation to the Chatham Islands.

This is a design that doesn't allow any errors with your measurements particularly using hand tools but very satisfying when you complete it.

FIRST DAY

Our first day rostered on at the Coastal Creatives Gallery, Coastlands, Paraparaumu. It's Easter Monday and it was a busy morning. Quieter in the afternoon which gave me a chance to do some designing.

Also brought in a couple of new creations.
