Tautoko to Splore’s Treaty partner, Ngāti Paoa, on their Treaty Settlement today which just happens to coincide with the Iwi’s original signing of The Treaty of Waitangi at Karaka Bay, in 1840.

This has been the result of over 15 years of formal Settlement negotiations with the Crown, preceeded by 140 years of iwi petitions and lobbying to seek redress for land confiscations dating back to 1863/64.

On November 3, 1863, British gunship, HMS Miranda was sent to the southwest shores of the Firth of Thames (Ngāti Paoa rohe) to seize Māori settlements and cut off transport routes for Waikato Māori parties. The ship and its boats bombarded the Pūkorokoro kāinga (village) with rockets and shells, resulting in deaths among the residents, including men, women, and children. As part of the Treaty Settlement today, the settlement of Miranda will be renamed Pūkorokoro.

Sambath saw it all. ✨
From holding court in the bathtub to furries in full strut, in her element, bodies flying on the cabaret rope, going full punk, indeed, and throwing down a proper New York house sermon direct from NYC.

And somehow… we stayed hydrated. 🍹

Cold ones in hand. The Corona bar all lounged out, couches and palms shifting in the breeze, its own little escape. Alba Cantina right on the beach, main stage in full view with a magarita in hand. Charred pineapple for us, thanks. Hypoketsu glowing blue at Te Kanikani. Node keeping the electrolytes steady all weekend, Joe doing mercy runs to the parched camp zones like a legend.

Splore Friday ✨

Beautiful beings streaming past the guy dancing on the post into Seaview. Goat track humming as we made our way to the pōwhiri. Ngāti Paoa and Ngāti Whanaunga holding us for Splore all these years. John in the kākahu, stones to take home.

Night fell. Tāpapakanga lit the sky, making the site legendary. Music everywhere, movement everywhere.

Artists bringing their energy. Pure Splore magic.
