Our native flora are super special and Sue’s homage to the Kakabeak shows this in an enduring rendering. Handwoven tapestry created from Sue’s photographic image of the flower is stunning. It commands your attention in the gallery. Well worth a visit. Creative Fibre Creative Fibre NZ Creative Taranaki Visit Ōpunakē Taranaki NZ South Taranaki

Do you know the 1990’s Pop Group Verve that became ‘The Verve’? Dot has chosen to represent them and her local district of Wigham in her handwoven tapestry currently in our gallery. I love the way Dot reveals how tapestry weaving keeps her grounded and peaceful in her surrounding chaotic world but then she combines the image from the album A Storm in Heaven as part of her tapestry. Who says weavers don’t have a sense of humour!! Over this chaos are the words ‘progress with unity’ from the Wigan Borough Council Motto.
I really enjoy this layered personal and social comment.
Then my delight is extended even more by the sheer skill of the weaving. Truly a work of art in all senses. from out of the blue studio gallery

Jackie Bennett celebrates life and movement in her work in the ‘Verve’ exhibition. She also bends some of the traditional woven tapestry rules by using wire for her warp. This has allowed her weaving to become multi-planar. Trained in England Jackie is one of the 15 British weavers in this beautiful exhibition. The other 15 are New Zealand weavers. Well worth an in person visit. Open Thursdays through Mondays 1-5 pm. @18 Halse Place, Ōpunakē 4616.

Weaving stories and telling the stories of her weaving, Matty Smith uses the ages old technique of hand weaving tapestry combined with AI image manipulation. She seeks to capture the gift of her mind’s illusive thoughts or sensings and bring this into a visual reality. It is a capturing of the act of a creative imagination. The interesting part of this is such acts of the imagination can be very fleeting and transient whereas the act of creating a handwoven tapestry is one of many hours of intense focus and meticulous attention to detail.

Matty’s work is a part of VERVE is a Tapestry Touring International exhibition which is in the gallery now. It is one of 30 works investigating the word ‘Verve’. Each work is exquisite and the variety is fascinating. Well worth a visit. 15 weavers are from England, 15 from New Zealand.

This is a free event - very approachable for children, worth adding to your to-do list.

Portrait weaving is quite complex on a fine scale such as we see in this work by Marilyn Rea-Menzies, on of the 30 tapestry weavers whose works are in ‘Verve’. The attention to thread by thread colour control gradually builds the total image. Marilyn is a master of this art. So too are the other artists on display - 15 from Britain and 15 from New Zealand. Check out Marilyn’s website to see more of her art. https://www.tapestry.co.nz/.
