Parting with work can sometimes be bitter sweet! I’ve only recently completed this selection of native New Zealand bird feather carvings which will soon be sent to their new corporate home.

I’m glad I took time to photograph them together, however, and appreciate what I’ve made. Destined to represent Aotearoa in an international office setting, I’m sure this collection will look stunning.

Represented in this collection of carved and painted feathers are kererū, kōtare, kea and tui. Each piece individually hand carved and painted over many hours!

I’ve recently had some of my more design based ideas made up for me in steel! I’m very excited to introduce my ‘Aotearoa’ sign in stainless steel suitable for indoors or out. An elegant and nostalgic design piece for those with New Zealand close to their heart ❤️. Piece measures 110cm long and will debut for sale at in Auckland July31-August 2.

A few pretty pairs, a growing collection of pieces being prepared for the in Auckland July 31-August 2. I’ll be focusing my efforts on some larger pieces also and hope to be nicely stocked up over the next few months.
This will be an exciting first for me and a great opportunity to show my work in the big smoke!

In homage to the moult! A time of year when birds have reared their young and they discard old feathers. New healthy ones are grown before the cooler months. A time when feathers may be more easily found.

I thought I’d create a montage in homage to the beautiful birds and their feathers that inspire me. Each feather pictured here is actually a hand carved and painted piece representing native New Zealand species including kakariki, tūī, kererū, kaka, kōtuku, kea, kahu and kōtare.

Carved from salvaged miro, painted with acrylics.

Much of Claire Jensen’s work explores themes relating to nature and the environment. She enjoys working with found objects and collected materials such as wood, metal and plastic as she is passionate about reusing resources and creating art with a sustainable ethos.

The materials she collects govern the project she makes and the techniques with which she makes them. Claire explores carving native NZ bird feathers from salvaged native timbers. These pieces represent what is precious to our national identity, our flora and fauna.
