Forrester Gallery

Forrester Gallery The Forrester Gallery presents varied and exciting exhibitions and houses a regional collection.

The spectacular building which houses the Forrester Gallery could be considered the finest work in the collection. Its history dates back to 1882 when the Bank of New South Wales purchased a plot of land next to the rival Bank of Otago, now the National Bank. The building served as a bank and manager's residence until 1979 when the Oamaru Borough Council acquired the site in exchange for a suitabl

e location in the central business district. The local council had been searching for a suitable location for a gallery since 1965 when retired architect and former mayor, John M. Forrester left a substantial bequest for the founding of a local gallery. After significant restoration including earthquake strengthening, the Forrester Gallery was opened in 1983. Today the Forrester Gallery, which is funded and administered by the Waitaki District Council, offers the Waitaki and wider region a varied and exciting exhibition programme, houses a growing collection of artworks significant to the region, and stands as an icon of Oamaru's unique whitestone historic district. The gallery supports local and regional artists and offers national and international exhibitions in all media, which reflect and challenge community interest. The Forrester Gallery is registered as a Category 1 site by the Historic Places Trust. Forrester Gallery’s page must not be used for electioneering purposes. Any post - positive or negative - made by any individual specifically relating to their own - or someone else's - nomination, intention to run for Council or election campaign, will be removed immediately.

We had our first wānaka in our beautiful new education room on Saturday with some of our whānau - kā mihi nui Jess, Moewai, Nicole, Vicki, Kitty, Tem, and Ross for all your mahi - it was great to see so many happy faces engaging with toi Māori and I’m sure our tamariki are stoked with their new mahi toi masterpieces ✨

Also a huge thank you to our .youthcouncil for hosting an amazing drawing workshop, we really appreciate all your mahi! ✨

We couldn’t have asked for a better day! Kā mihi ki a koutou Ōamaru! To all our performers, artists, helpers, and attendees - we are so grateful. We had an amazing turnout on Saturday, and it was lovely to see so many people connecting with arts and culture both within our whare toi and outside too ✨

It’s been a busy time getting this new extension ready but what a perfect way to welcome it with our Waitaki community!

A huge thank you to our generous donor that allowed for this amazing event to happen. We’re now back to our regular opening hours, so if you haven’t checked out the gallery yet - our door is open for you - nau mai, haere mai e te whānau ✨

✨Pānui: Retail space and new reception area✨
You may have noticed we’ve moved our reception in the opposite direction, but did you know we now have a retail space?

We have a range of pukapuka, Forrester Gallery tote bags, Waitaki Tartan, and also pieces available by and Grainstore Gallery!

We don’t want to take away from existing creative businesses in our rohe, but provide additional avenues for our visitors to buy from them or learn more about what they do and where to find them!

To start with is a feature on the Historic Precinct, which we will look to expand in future as we find out what our community and visitors will want to see more of. Who would you like to see in our shop? We have so many amazing creatives in Ōamaru and Waitaki - we look forward to partnering with more artists and seeing how these shop displays can complement our exhibition programme too - so there’s more to come 🥳✨
