Free Filmmaking Workshops 🙌

Got an idea but not the skills yet? Climate Action Tai Tokerau will send a filmmaking workshop straight to your school or community group, free of charge, to help you turn your climate action story into a film. Sometimes all a good story needs is a bit of help getting off the ground.

You Don't Need to Be a Filmmaker 🎞️

The competition's "Creating a Film" resource page breaks it right down: what's the story, who are you telling it to, and how? A good film — fiction or documentary — just needs a beginning, middle and end. If you're telling a true story, do your research, check your facts, and treat the people and places in your film with respect. That's it. That's the brief.

Behind the Scenes with Ohaeawai School 📹

Back in 2023, students at Ohaeawai Primary School took second place in the Climate Action Film Contest, with their film screened alongside other entries at that year's Te Taitokerau climate action conference. It's a great reminder that some of the sharpest climate storytelling in the region is coming out of primary school classrooms.

Youth Voices, Big Impact 🎥

In the 14–18 category, Susannah Hovell took out both First Prize and the People's Choice Award at the 2025 Climate Action Film Competition, with Georgie King placing second. Proof that when you hand rangatahi a camera and a real issue to explore, they rise to it every time.

Meet the 2025 Winners 🏆

This year's top film in the 9–13 age group came from Te Taitamatane class at Te Kura o Ōmanaia, who also took home the Te Reo prize. Room 6 from Whau Valley School picked up third place and the People's Choice Award. Real rangatahi, telling real local stories of climate action — that's the whole point of this kaupapa.

Lights, Camera, Climate Action 🎬

Got a phone and a story to tell? The Te Tai Tokerau Climate Action Film Competition wants short films (4–7 minutes) from Northlanders showing how people here are adapting to and fighting climate change. Documentary, animation, music video, avant-garde — however you want to tell it. No entry fee, and you don't need to be a filmmaker to enter, just someone with a story.

The field day was an in-depth exploration of regenerative practices in kiwifruit orcharding. We dived into four key topics, with 30 minutes dedicated to each. To keep conversations meaningful, we broke into small groups that rotated through each session. This format encouraged questions, real discussion, and the chance to work through any concerns together—
because this was about conversation, not lecture.
After 30 minutes, each group moved to the next topic, ensuring everyone experiences all four sessions.
