Kia ora and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love Letter to the Mountain/Reta Aroha ki te Mounga UPDATE!

In April 2025 and February 2026, I organized a public art project where 70m long Love Letters were written by/with the public to show adoration for Taranaki Mounga, a project called “Love Letters to the Mountain/Reta Aroha ki te Mounga”.

The first letter was written along the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and the second, at Pukeiti Garden.

Yesterday, 14 February, 2026 my dear friend, artist, skater and explorer, Amy Blinkhorne rose above the clouds and climbed to the summit of our dear Taranaki Mounga. Tucked in her pack travelled a lithographic handprinted version (1/25 the size of the original) of the April 2025 edition of “Love Letter to the Mountain/Reta Aroha ki te Mounga”.

For those who do not know, this climb is no small feat. The summit of the dormant volcano is 2518m with a 1600m vertical climb to the peak.

Ngā mihi nui Amy for delivering our love letter (and on Valentine’s Day to boot!)
❤️

*Amy helped save the Te Rewa Rewa letter from flying into the river when the wind came up and was behind the camera for us at Pukeiti.

“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.”
—Winnie the Pooh

Today, 18 January, is Winnie the Pooh Day! It is celebrated annually on January 18th, marking the birthday of author A.A. Milne (born 1882) who created the beloved bear and his Hundred Acre Wood friends. It’s a day to honor themes of friendship, kindness, and simple joy.

Winnie the Pooh was inspired by a real black bear named Winnie at the London Zoo, whom Milne’s son, Christopher Robin, loved to visit.

Santa Lucia (Lux) is an outdoor gallery located at 36 Currie Street, Ngāmotu New Plymouth. Pop by when you are in town for the .

Santa Lucia was a young Christian martyr who died in the early 4th century in Italy. Her name is derivative of “Lux,” the Latin word for light; she is the patron saint of the eyes (the lights of the body) and is invoked for protection against blindness and all other diseases of the eye. (She is also the patron saint of gondoliers, architects, miners, sudden death and the city of Siracusa).

Santa Lucia is often portrayed displaying her own eyeballs on a golden plate. The origin of this imagery is unclear, but legends allude her eyes were either gouged out by persecutors or removed by her own hand. Some stories tell of her eyes being miraculously restored after her death.

This collection of photographs is an ode to myopia, or nearsightedness, as I have worn glasses (or contacts) since I was seven years old.

Each photo in the collection contains my nearsighted blue eyes set within parts of my body, everyday objects, or a wink to historical renderings of Santa Lucia.
