The Armarie Room

The Armarie Room The Armarie Room is a creative print studio in Nelson, New Zealand. We are proud to be one of the only fine press studios operating in New Zealand.

Founded by artist Renee Hadlow, it is a studio dedicated to creating beautifully-crafted work. Hey....I’d love to tell you a little of our story!! It began with a love of printmaking, an appetite for caffeine and an obsession for heavy, vintage machinery. With imagination, precision, a can of elbow grease, and more than a peck of moxie, The Armarie Room was born! Established by owner Renee Hadlow,

it is a studio dedicated to the craft of quality printing. On a visit to the printery you may see cast iron presses gently clanking and take in the nostalgic scent of ink. These elegant machines have been restored by Renee and a local community of print enthusiasts - journeymen printers who worked these presses in the days when kids delivered newspapers on Raleigh choppers. Today we’re proud to work with this extraordinary equipment. Alongside our products and services, we provide opportunities for hands on learning. We regularly host events and workshops designed to share our knowledge of fine press printing. Should you ever find yourself in sunny Nelson, we would love to share a little of our story with you.

Clever design meets clever production.
These vibrant business cards for were printed using just two ink colours — hot pink and electric blue. Because each paper colour reacts differently with ink, it creates an entirely different feel depending on the stock. Thoughtful production can transform a result. I’d love to hear from you if you’ve got a clever design in mind.

MAKING & TEACHING If you’re new around here, kia ora — I’m Renee, printmaker and tutor at The Armarie Room. Creativity and teaching have always run alongside each other for me. My pathway into teaching began with coaching gymnastics and dance. It wasn’t just about sharing skills; I loved seeing confidence, focus, and creative expression grow and develop. When I started travelling, that love of teaching travelled with me. I worked across the arts and education, eventually introducing English into the mix too. It showed me how creativity can act as a bridge between people and cultures, connecting in unexpected ways.
All of that has led me here — developing printmaking workshops that are fun, exploratory, and grounded in skill-building. Printmaking can be drawing-focused, painterly, abstract, graphic, or full of texture (my passion!), but most importantly, there’s space within it for everyone.
