As part of our 125-year campaign, we’ve been hearing some wonderful stories about what NCMA has meant to the people who have walked through our doors.

For some, NCMA is where they started taking music lessons.

Some have taught here for many years, sharing their love of music with generations of students.

And for many parents, NCMA brings back memories of helping their children backstage before a performance.

If these walls could talk, they would have thousands of stories to tell: first lessons, nervously waiting for a music exam, first performances, friendships, teachers, concerts, and celebrations.

After 125 years, NCMA isn't just a building. It's a collection of memories.

LEAVE A LASTING NOTE

Did you know September is Bequest Month?

For 125 years, NCMA has been a place to learn, teach, perform and appreciate music. A place where generations of people have come together through music.

Now we're looking toward the next 125 years.

A gift in your will, no matter the size, can help keep the music playing for generations to come. It can help support the ongoing work that keeps NCMA running, from caring for our heritage building and instruments to creating a place where people can continue to learn, teach and experience music.

You don't have to leave a fortune to leave a lasting legacy.

Throughout September, we'll be sharing more about the different ways you can leave a legacy to NCMA, including the 1% Club, Foundation, One Last Encore and Ripple Effect.

‘Transform’ opens with Henry Purcell’s Chacony in G Minor. Following is Anthony Ritchie, one of Aotearoa’s most eminent composers, celebrating playful melodic lines and infectious rhythm in Perpetual Motion and Last Dance from String Quartet No. 3. F***y Mendelssohn’s only string quartet showcases her poetic, passionate and introspective voice, too long overlooked in the shadow of her brother, Felix. Salina Fisher’s soothing tribute to grief and loss in Heal serves as a poignant companion to Benjamin Britten’s second string quartet. Written in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War and widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary pieces of the twentieth century, Britten offers a powerful reflection of his inner feelings and a moving tribute to his compositional idol, Henry Purcell.

The concert programme, crafted in our signature style, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Each piece of music is preceded by a lively and informative introduction delivered by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions seek to shed light on the stories behind the music, making it an enriching experience suitable for all audiences.
