Review: Stones in His Pockets at the Red Door Theatre, Nelson

It’s not every day you see two actors bring a whole Irish village to life, but at the Red Door Theatre in Nelson, Hugh Neil and Mike Williams did just that — and with only a pocketful of props! Stones in His Pockets returned to the stage with the same two actors who first performed these roles 20 years ago, and boy, was it grand.

For a show that relies on just two performers playing a dozen or so characters, the energy was high. Hugh and Mike swapped between accents and personalities quicker than a sheepdog herding cattle! From the down-on-their-luck Jake and Charlie to the eccentric American film crew, they kept the audience on their toes, delivering both laughs and tender moments with ease. It was like a masterclass in character work—except this one had a heavy dose of Irish charm.

The set was minimalist, which worked well for the production. With just a few simple costume tweaks and some nifty lighting, they had us believing we were in a bustling Irish town one minute, then on a Hollywood set the next. It really proved that you don’t need big-budget effects when you’ve got two actors who can make a whole room feel like a cast of 20.

Having reprised these roles after two decades, Hugh and Mike brought real depth to their performances. It was clear they knew these characters inside and out, and the result was something both fresh and familiar—like catching up with old friends who haven’t lost their sense of humor. The chemistry between the two was undeniable, and their quick-witted banter made it feel like they hadn’t skipped a beat since the last time they stepped into these roles.

Stones in His Pockets proved that even after 20 years, it’s still got plenty of heart and humour tucked away in its pockets. If you’re after a night of sharp wit, clever storytelling, and a little bit of Irish magic, this show is a must-see!

Stones in His Pockets is showing at the Red Door Theatre October 3-5 & 10-12 at 7pm. Tickets are available on iTickets.

Red Door Theatre's current production of Urinetown is an absolute blast, mixing sharp wit with vibrant performances and a hefty dose of humor. Set in a dystopian future where water is scarce and private toilets are banned, Urinetown flushes out some serious laughs while poking fun at corporate greed and environmental neglect.

The show grabbed the audience's attention with its strong singing and energetic cast. The minimalist set, with its industrial vibe and stark lighting, perfectly captured the town's grim atmosphere while letting the actors shine. Director Hugh Neil’s vision really brought out the best in everyone, making sure the show hit all the right notes between humor and heart.

Chiqui Sayson as Hope Cladwell was a standout, and the beauty of her voice is worth the price of admission alone. Opposite her, Max Choma nailed it as Bobby Strong, the rebellious hero looking to "relieve" the town of its oppressive laws. His performance was passionate and heartfelt, making Bobby's fight for justice feel totally genuine.

The ensemble cast was just as impressive, possibly one of the strongest sounding ensembles I have had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. Keith Marshall was a "pee-rfect" villain with his commanding stage presence and sly charm.
The music was a huge highlight. The live orchestra, led by Musical Director Chris Lukies, brought Mark Hollmann's score to life with energy and precision.

While the show was still working out some small technical issues of an opening night, it was overall an enjoyable experience. The biggest critique I have is that Nelson audiences, while seemingly enjoying the performance, have the bad habit of enjoying it in silence and give so little back to the performers.

In a nutshell, Red Door Theatre's Urinetown was a toe-tapping, tongue-in-cheek good show. It struck the right balance between humor and social commentary, making for a memorable theater experience that flowed seamlessly from start to finish. So don’t p**s away your chance to see this show and buy your tickets today.
