Textile artist Giles Panting joins Suter curator Kyla Mackenzie for a conversation about his new artwork, Fray. Together they discuss Panting’s longstanding interest in material as an expressive generator of meaning, and the history of lace as a symbol of status and power.

We were thrilled to host Sōsisi Tales brought to us by last week. Sōsisi tales is a play produced by Claw Collective. It was so great to see the theatre full of young people for what was a really engaging show. The show was relatable, funny and thought provoking with a solid message to our mātātahi. After the show the young people attended workshops to discuss and reflect on the themes of the show. A big thanks to all involved in bringing the show to Whakatū!

We Are Young – Childhood in Photography opened last week and local tamariki including this group from Auckland Point School have already been enjoying and engaging with the exhibition.

We Are Young explores photography of children in Aotearoa from the late 19th century to now. The exhibition offers insight into how the young have been portrayed by photographers across different cultural moments.

Opening next month at The Suter.

We Are Young explores how young people have been represented on camera — from intimate images of whānau to street photography and contemporary portraiture.

Spanning different eras and perspectives, the exhibition looks at the relationships behind the lens, and how ideas of youth, identity, and representation continue to shift.
