The Barden Party

The Barden Party We bring immersive theatre experiences to where you are. Be a part of the live theatre phenomenon taking New Zealand by storm! And we're coming to the USA!

The Barden Party is Shakespeare like you’ve never seen it before (their name comes from The Bard + Garden Party), and they have quickly established themselves as a must-see event, with bookings in private gardens and public venues right across New Zealand from November through April. Unlike any other Shakespeare performance you may have seen in the past, The Barden Party offers a truly authentic v

intage theatre experience with a modern twist- operating as a traveling troupe just as was done hundreds of years ago. They carry all of their props, set and instruments with them, and are able to adapt their heartfelt performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to suit a wide variety of spaces, giving them the freedom to transform private backyards, gardens, and public venues into a joyful world of lords and ladies and fairy magic, with mischief and laughter aplenty. Directed by Laura Irish and musical direction by Jake Byrom Robinson, this family-friendly jukebox musical extravaganza makes Shakespeare’s language accessible for audiences of ALL ages and experience levels. With lively musical outbursts featuring music by artists such as Billie Eilish, George Michael, Hall & Oates (and more!) and laugh-out-loud moments by professional actors and improvisers woven throughout the story, this lighthearted comedy is the perfect chance for the uninitiated to dip their toes into the world of Shakespeare's stories and language. July 5 - August 1 2022. The troupe has been completely booked out for private functions every weekend throughout New Zealand this summer and they are only in the USA for one month, so this is a special opportunity to witness this unforgettable performance. You can support our tour here! https://www.gofundme.com/f/Thebardenparty

The Barden Party was created as a result of constant cancellations in the performing arts industry for these talented actors over the past two years due to COVID-19. Finally, in November 2021, actor and director, Laura Irish, got fed up and decided to take theatre back to its roots through a style of touring that was harder to cancel. Taking theater directly to the people. The troupe has primarily performed in private back gardens for groups of family, friends and neighborhoods across the country. Being outdoors and with people that know each other and by following the NZ government mandates for vaccinated events was a safer way to continue presenting performing arts during these difficult times and connecting to audiences. Book this talented troupe in your American backyard, and they can perform for your family and friends in an intimate setting or book them for your venue, company or university. But book quickly as they are in each location for a very limited time. Current locations on our schedule and surrounding areas:
Honolulu, HI
Chicago, IL
St. Louis, MO
New York, NY
Los Angeles, CA

If you're outside of these areas, get in touch anyway and we can see what we can make happen!

*a 50% deposit upon booking will be requested. Price and payment info is given on request. For bookings in NZ or the USA, get in touch through messenger or by emailing [email protected] and we'll answer your questions and send you the booking form!

It’s not always easy for independent artists to say this out loud, but right now we genuinely need help. ❤️

This August, The Barden Party will return to the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe with two productions — Macbeth: Blood & Bluegrass and our brand new original musical, Heracles: Of Men & Beasts.

We are incredibly proud to be taking bold New Zealand storytelling overseas again. But the reality is that arts funding is in an extremely difficult state right now, and for many independent companies, international opportunities like this are becoming harder and harder to sustain without direct community support.

So we are fundraising.

If you’d like to help us get to Scotland and the UK, our Givealittle page is now live (link in bio and below). Truly — every single donation helps, no matter the size.

https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-the-barden-party

We are also launching our Sponsor-an-Actor programme:
✨ $5000 sponsors one actor’s Edinburgh journey.
This can be sponsored by a company, an individual, or even a group of friends/community members pooling together. The actor you sponsor will personally keep in touch throughout the process with updates, behind-the-scenes moments and reflections from the tour.

We’ll also be announcing some special gifts and supporter rewards later this week.

For years, audiences and communities have helped independent theatre survive and thrive — and we wouldn’t still be here without you. Thank you for reading, sharing, donating, sponsoring, or simply cheering us on from afar.

Every little bit counts. 🎭

🚨 FINAL NZ SHOWS BEFORE EDINBURGH FRINGE! 🚨

Award-winning professional theatre company ✨ The Barden Party ✨ is heading back to the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe for our second international season — but first, we’re bringing TWO unforgettable productions to Napier for one final Aotearoa send-off!

🎻 🔥 MACBETH: BLOOD & BLUEGRASS
A wild, musical, Southern Gothic Shakespeare experience packed with bluegrass, murder, passion and live music.

📅 13 & 14 June
⏱ Running time: 90 minutes
🚫 No interval

⚔️ HERACLES: OF BEASTS AND MEN
A brand new original musical created in New Zealand by Laura Irish & Ollie Howlett — an epic, darkly funny and deeply moving retelling of the myth of Heracles.

📅 ONE SHOW ONLY — 13 June
⏱ Running time: 55 minutes
🚫 No interval

📍 Venue: Sacred Heart College, Napier

If the weather is beautiful, Macbeth will take place outdoors in the amphitheatre — so dress warmly, bring hot drinks, blankets and cuddle up to your loved ones beneath the stars. ✨ If the weather turns, the performance will move indoors. Heracles will be performed indoors.

We’re especially excited to bring these productions home to Hawke’s Bay, with two of our stars hailing from the region — the brilliant Ollie Howlett and Isabella Aarons 💛

These are your FINAL chances to see both productions before they travel to Scotland and tour the UK, so gather your friends, travel from afar, and come celebrate independent NZ theatre before we take it overseas!

🎟 Tickets available now via Humanitix.

And if you can’t make it along but would still like to support independent New Zealand theatre on the world stage, please consider becoming a sponsor or donating to our Givealittle page to help get us to Edinburgh Fringe and the UK. Every bit of support helps make this dream possible. ❤️
