Mike & I spent a couple of nights at Mount Cook and walked part of the Ho**er Valley Track to experience the new suspension bridge (now NZ’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge). We couldn’t believe how busy the track was considering it’s the middle of Winter! This photo was taken from the first bridge looking across towards Mount Sefton.

On our last trip away in the Moho, we managed one precious night at Lake Camp before we had to head back to help look after our sick daughter and grandson in Christchurch! Sadly, the sunrise this time had very little colour but the reflections were spectacular. This location seems to put on a show every time we visit and each time is so different. Definitely worth getting out of bed for on a cold Winter's morning!

Taking a break from our Sumba images, here's a shot from our recent very brief trip down to Mount Cook. Heather and I have visited Tasman Lake a couple of times before but there had been very little ice to make for an interesting foreground. This time there was almost too much ice. Be careful what you wish for!

When planning a photography trip Heather and I mostly enjoy doing our own research and making our own itinerary. For Sumba Island, Indonesia we are so glad that we gave this responsibility to Australian Photographer Wendy Klein and her wonderful driver Ferbando. Their combined knowledge meant that we visited some wonderful, if remote, locations and people. It's impossible to select a favourite photo spot on the island (they were all so different), but this was certainly one of the most memorable - access was difficult - down very narrow unformed tracks in a 4 wheel drive, in the dark. But the location, with the amazing sea stacks, was breathtaking. The coffee and breakfast on the beach afterwards was icing on the cake.

After our night-time excursion to the boulders we managed some sleep before it was time to get up in plenty of time to catch the sunrise. We like to get to a location at least 1 hour before sunrise, especially if the sky is likely to be clear, as any soft colours are more vibrant then. The forecast was for clear skies, but as we set off we could already see some colour appearing on the clouds near the horizon. So our planned stroll to the rocks turned into a forced march. This is when being able to visit a location more tham once pays off, as you already have an idea of the shots you want and can get straight into it. The tide was going out and the light was changing, so we had to work fast. But it was great fun and an extra bonus was that we had the whole place to ourselves!

Staying very local to the Moeraki Boulders was very convenient, especially if you are planning a night sky shoot. Heathe...

Staying very local to the Moeraki Boulders was very convenient, especially if you are planning a night sky shoot. Heather joined me which was a nice change as my night photography is usually a lonely pastime. The lighting challenge was of course - it was dark. Without any moon it was very dark! So the main problems were - i. not tripping over/walking into the boulders ii. turning your torch on to see your composition without upsetting the other photographer! We only had to shout at each other a couple of times!! Fortunately the tide was now out so we didn't have to worry about getting wet.

Our first photo stop on our recent road trip down the South Island was at Moeraki Boulders (we can recommend the Red Barn POP, right next to the beach, and about a 10 min stroll to the boulders). We arrived around lunchtime and stayed until the following morning, so had the pleasure and challenge of photographing these mysterious rocks in different lighting and states of the tide. Many of you will have already seen Heather's wonderful images on her FB page and know we had some great conditions. So over the next few posts I thought I'd take you on a little photographic journey of how our images changed with the conditions. Starting with the first afternoon......
