For Strength.

I made this painting during the lockdown and it took weeks to finally make itself known. I wrestled with it for days and when it finally settled, this resistance and strength felt contained within it as an object.

Previews by appointment.

All welcome to exhibition opening this Friday 24 July at Arden Bar and Kitchen from 5pm. All paintings will also be shown at Arden & Porta Via throughout Saturday 25 July

For Abundance.

It was a joy to make this painting. It just arrived - almost of its own accord. I love the way this pyrite formation feels like it is going to touch down and land in the room where it is hanging - manifesting its own tumbling abundant self.

For Abundance, 2020, acrylic on board, 1200 x 1000mm, framed.

Rather than visualise what I want to make, I try to foster certain conditions for the art work to manifest into. I often use specific music, light, and rituals to aid this. It requires intense, sustained focus, sometimes for weeks.

For Focus, 2020, acrylic on board, 800 x 800mm, framed.

“FORCES is a group of paintings I made during the recent lockdown period in a temporary basement studio under my house in central Nelson.

The isolation gave me the rare opportunity to slow down, rest and reflect. Making these paintings was meditative, quiet and solitary. The dark, narrow confines under my home compressed my often expansive installation practice into a focused series of works, depicting pyrite crystal formations.

I have made these paintings on and off for years, and they always test my mettle. Some days under the house were a joy, with the pyrite crystal clusters virtually painting themselves; others were a struggle where I had to wrestle the perspectives, tones, and textures into shape. Some of these qualities feel residual in the attitude of the paintings; some are light, or slippery, while others are tough and resistant. All of them are shapeshifters with the capacity to recede and flatten, then quicken and glow.”
