Napier Pipe Band

Napier Pipe Band The Napier Pipe Band is a parading band, active in community events and enthusiastic about teaching The history of pipe bands in Napier goes back many years.

The Drones and Sticks PB was formed in February 1999 after a group of keen people got together and decided they wanted to put their talents to good use for the pipe band movement while the City of Napier can trace its origins back to the Highland Society of Napier's pipers in 1895. The merger of the two bands has seen us develop a special organisation that will continue the tradition of pipe bands making a contribution to Napier.

The Band is playing at the Hastings & District Scots Society Ingleside. Its always good to immerse ourselves in the music and dancing of these evenings. Sad that the Society is winding up after 96 years of activity. We have enjoyed many great times with the members and will do our best to keep the traditions going.

We will be holding our AGM on Monday 8 June. Looking back through the historical records Hawke’s Bay Pipe Band was active back in 1912, more than 114 years ago. It morphed into the Napier Highland Pipe Band and then into the Port Ahuriri Caledonian Society Pipe Band followed by the City of Napier PB and eventually into the current day Napier Pipe Band. That’s a long history of Scottish presence here in Napier which we honour by our continued devotion to the art of piping and drumming. Agenda and reports will be on our website before the end of the month.

A big thank you to the members who played for the EIT Hawke's Bay graduations. At Napier’s Municipal Theatre again and then the parade in damp conditions. Continues a tradition which started with the first EIT graduation in Hastings many years ago.

We met today to remember Drum Major Don Stuart who died recently and reflected on his contribution to the band over a number of years. Don joined us in 2007 and quickly stepped into the leadership position, working hard to get himself up to speed for the role.

One of his proudest moments was leading the Band at the 2008 Bundanoon festival and holding the post of Drum Major of the day. He enjoyed Art Deco, Anzac Day and other major events, and he was a regular attendee at all parades.

We had a nice afternoon tea (he was keen on his food), many people recalled interesting moments with Don and we played him a tune.

Thank you Don for your keen enthusiasm for the Drones & Sticks PB and the Napier Pipe Band.
