The Art of Seeing

The Art of Seeing We're 'The Art of Seeing' Academy, a charity (CC62617) bringing fun photo workshops to kids 8-18 in Wellington.

We help all children, including those with special needs (ADHD & ASD), discover their creativity through photography and connect with nature! Photography workshops in Wellington and Wellington area for young learners aged 8 to 18. Our goal is to enhance wellbeing, mindfulness, mental health, and environmental consciousness through the art of photography. Why are we passionate about teaching kids p

hotography? Because knowing how to express themselves visually will help them cultivate a deep appreciation and fascination with photography, recognising that each photograph contributes uniquely to their understanding of the world and themselves. Photography is great for:

- Seeing the world in a new way. It opens your eyes to things you might not have noticed before, making you more aware and curious.

- Helping with tough times. When you're feeling things that are hard to put into words, taking photos can express how you feel and what you see around you.

- Finding inspiration everywhere and boosting creativity.

- Connecting with nature. Getting kids off their screens and outside is so good for them. It helps reduce stress, calm their minds, and has many other benefits.

Looking back on our July workshop at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre! 📸🌿 Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre

Our young photographers had the chance to explore the reserve through their cameras, discovering wildlife, nature and all the little details that are so easy to walk past.

A huge thank you to Tara Swan Tara Swan 🌿 NZ Wildlife Photographer for being our fantastic guide, sharing her knowledge and giving the kids such a wonderful opportunity to learn, explore and photograph this special place. 💚

We’re excited to share the video from the day. Photos from the workshop can be seen in the gallery on our website!

We had such a wonderful time yesterday at Queen Elizabeth Park thanks to Masterton District Council and the help of our volunteers. 🫶🏻

The deer were delighted with their photo session and rewarded us with plenty of curious looks in exchange for some fresh juicy lettuce. The birds also enjoyed the extra attention, showing off their wonderful colours and feathers through the lenses of our young photographers. 🦌📷🦜

Next, we’ll be coming to Kapiti on 30 May. If you’ve been meaning to reserve a place and request a spare camera, make sure to register for the workshop on our website as soon as possible. 🙂

We’ll be back in Masterton again soon, so don’t miss out. Sign up for updates on our website to hear about future workshops and events.

Despite challenging weather and the risk of getting completely soaked in 3mm rain 🌧️, we took the chance and were rewarded with beautiful photographs captured through the lenses of young photographers. 📸✨

Thanks to the support from the Horowhenua District Council , we had a wonderful time at our first Levin workshop and the kids were super excited! 🌿 We’re already looking forward to coming back and exploring more places around the area.

Keep an eye on our website for more workshop dates and locations.

We’re excited to share something special! ✨

'Through Our Eyes' is our brand new magazine (first in NZ) created with and for young photographers. ❤️

Inside 80 pages, you’ll find inspiring photos, stories from young creatives, interviews with professional photographers, and simple tips to help kids (and parents) better understand photography.

We are very grateful to Miro Kennett and Sam McGee for sharing their inspiring journeys with us! As well as a very insightful interview with Sandy Hall on creativity and ADHD.

This is more than a magazine. It’s a space for expression, confidence, and seeing the world differently.

If your child loves photography, this is for them.

We have more than enough print copies, so order yours on our website: photographyforkids.org/projects/magazine

And if you’d love to see your child’s work featured in the next issue, come join one of our workshops! 📸

Through Our Eyes is a NZ kids photography magazine featuring inspiring images, interviews, creative stories, and simple camera tips for young photographers and their families.
