✨ Proud Moment ✨

Last night, our Gujarati Sunday School senior students had the absolute honor and privilege of performing at the Gujarat Day celebrations! 🇳🇿🇮🇳

Hosted by the Indian High Commission in Wellington and the Wellington Indian Association Inc at the stunning High Commission building, it was an incredibly well-organized evening filled with inspiring speeches, energetic performances, entertaining skits, and a delicious dinner.

Our 12 senior students took to the stage to perform to the vibrant, rhythmic beats of Ranchhod Rangila by Rajesh Ahir and Sabhiben Ahir. For those who don't know, Ranchhod is a deeply loved name for Lord Krishna in Gujarat, celebrating his wit, charm, and the colorful joy he brings to his devotees through the energy of Raas and folk dance! 🪵✨

A massive, heartfelt thank you to our incredibly talented senior teacher, Kruti Desai, for choreographing such a fantastic piece. Watching Arushi, Ghanika, Nina, Zuri, Kiara, Siya, Aarav, Kiyaan, Rian, Nityent, Yuen, and Kaiser shine on stage was an immensely proud moment for all of us. You brought the house down! 🙌

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to Prashant Balsara for organizing our participation, and to all the amazing parents whose hands-on support made last night possible.

To us, Gujarat Day is more than just a celebration—it is a beautiful reminder of what being Gujarati means. It’s about community, connection, carrying our rich heritage forward, and seeing our younger generation embrace their roots with so much pride and joy. ❤️

Celebrating Mother’s Day at the Indian Cultural Society Gujarati Sunday School! 🌸

Today was a beautiful day filled with creativity, laughter, and reflection. Our students spent the morning crafting special paper flowers to take home—a small token of love that, unlike real flowers, will hopefully last forever!

We spent time talking with the children about the meaning of Mother’s Day. From "she gives the best hugs" to "she cooks my favorite food," their answers reminded us of the pure joy mothers bring into our lives. We also discussed how this day honors our **Grandmothers (Bas)** and all the **Mother figures** who guide us. These relationships are the roots of our family tree, keeping us grounded and strong.

Motherhood in our Heritage
In our culture, the role of a mother is held in the highest regard. There is a beautiful Gujarati proverb that captures this perfectly:
**"મા તે મા, બીજા બધા વગડા ના વા"**
*(Ma te Ma, Bija Badha Vagda na Va)*
"A mother is a mother; all others are like the wind of the desert." It signifies that a mother’s love is peerless and irreplaceable.

In our Vedic traditions, we often say **"Matru Devo Bhava"**, teaching us to treat our mothers with the same reverence as a deity.

To all our wonderful mums and bas: thank you for your endless dedication. Thank you for bringing your children to Sunday School each week and for your commitment to passing down our rich Gujarati culture, language, and heritage to the next generation. You are the first teachers of our traditions.

Excited to be back together to reconnect and see all our friends at Sunday School. Our little school continues to grow and it’s lovely to see a number of new families joining and coming along.

In the coming weeks we will be endeavouring to find out more about what our community love about Sunday School so we can ensure we are focusing on those things!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums! Especially the Mums who bring their children to Sunday School and contribute to our community. We know how busy mum life is, so we appreciate every single one of you.

Today we were grateful to have Depikamasi and Radhaben come to Sunday school to do a fun craft activity with our younger group. Our older children were learning how to write Mother’s Day messages for their Mums in Gujarati 🥰

Next week there is no Sunday School as we have our Indian Food Fiesta. Please pop in and support us and the Indian Cultural Society with this amazing fundraising event.

The Indian Food Fiesta is back! We are so excited to be helping the Indian Cultural Society to put this amazing community event on once again. There will be a wide selection of Indian food, as well as the Sunday School Bake Sale. Sunday 18th sorted!

Come celebrate the Festival of Colour, and share the Holi magic with your children!

Meet at 10am at Petone Recreation Grounds for Prathna, colour throwing Holi fun, music and games.

Wear white, bring towels and spare clothes!
All are welcome to attend, bring your family and friends!

Holi is a popular and significant Hindu festival celebrated as the Festival of Colours, Love, and Spring (In India). It celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna.

Additionally, the day signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu.

And that’s a wrap on an amazing 2024 for ICS Gujarati Sunday School! This year:
⬆️We have watched our roll grow from 16 students to 28 students!
📚Created three streams of learning, so children can learn at the right level for them
🙏🏽 Learnt new Prathna’s and got new children learning instruments
🎊Celebrated multiple events on the Hindu Calendar
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Seen more and more involvement from families who are seeing Sunday School as a valuable family activity to do together
🏘️Collaborated with ICS and the WIA Sunday School to work together to achieve our common goals
💃🕺🏻 Celebrated Diwali and the end of the year in the best possible way, with an amazing programme showcasing many of the important Hindu festivals

Endless thankyous to everybody who played a part in bringing the show and the rest of the year together, it’s so important for our children and beautiful to see their pride in their hardwork and their Indian Culture.
