There is something rather satisfying about playing a Lupkin when the rest of the party is close by.

Pack Strike rewards you for having an ally beside your target, and Protective Instinct lets you get to a companion when they're in trouble. Neither ability is complicated, but together they give the Lupkin a very particular feel at the table. You want to be in the middle of things, fighting alongside your pack rather than standing at the back and watching everyone else get hit.

The Lupkin are available now as a playable species for D&D 5.5e.

I like putting ordinary people into towns. Not every person the players meet needs to be connected to the adventure. Sometimes they're just going about their day, buying food, carrying something home, or trying to get somewhere before the weather turns.

It makes a difference when the players realise that the town doesn't stop existing when they're not looking at it. There are people who have their own jobs, arguments, errands and problems that have absolutely nothing to do with whatever ancient evil the party is currently chasing.

Of course, try telling that to the players once they've decided the bloke carrying a bucket looks suspicious.

Meet the Lupkin.

These Fey are all about the pack. Family, friends, travelling companions, even the people they meet along the road can become part of it. Once you've earned a Lupkin's trust, you've got someone who is going to look out for you.

They're also excellent trackers, with keen senses that make them particularly good at following trails and finding people who have gone missing.

The Lupkin are now available as a playable species for D&D 5.5e.

Find them at Bea Books.

There is always that point in a game when the players decide they want to know what's happening in the tavern.

Not because you've planned anything. They just start asking people questions.

That's when having a few rumours ready to go is rather useful. Some can be useful, some can be complete nonsense, and a few can give you something to work with if the players decide they want to follow up on one.

That's why we put together 100 Tavern Rumours. A bunch of things your players might overhear while they're having a drink, looking for work, or poking their noses into things that really aren't their business.

And let's be honest, they'll probably investigate the wrong one anyway.

100 Tavern Rumours Volume 1 is available now from Bea Books.

There is something about a friendly innkeeper that makes players suspicious.

Maybe it's because we've all been playing too long, but the moment he's cheerful, remembers their names and offers them a drink on the house, someone at the table is going to ask for an Insight check.

Of course, sometimes he's just a friendly innkeeper. He likes his customers, pours a decent pint and has a dog that will happily sit beside anyone willing to share their dinner.

Although, if the players want to spend half the evening trying to discover his terrible secret, I'm not going to stop them.

I wasn't planning on giving him one, but I've got time.

A random question popped into my head during a game...

Who delivers the mail? Not magical messages. Just ordinary letters.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised that person has probably seen more of the world than most adventurers. They've crossed kingdoms, dodged bandits, dealt with grumpy innkeepers and, if they're really unlucky, had to explain to a dragon why it's not getting any mail today.

It got me thinking about all the ordinary people who make fantasy worlds feel alive.

I still remember one campaign where we went looking for the blacksmith... and he wasn't there. He'd gone to shoe a horse.

That tiny moment stuck with me far longer than most boss fights because it made the town feel like it existed whether we were there or not.

It got me thinking about all the little things that make an RPG world feel alive, so I wrote about it.

Small. Curious. Fey.

Catkin are playful creatures who enjoy secrets, shiny things, and causing a little trouble. They make their homes among the Fey, but there's nothing stopping one from wandering into the mortal world in search of something interesting.
