Werimoana

The first waka the team from Hihiaua Cultural Centre has carved together, Werimoana is a testament to the tutelage given by Te Warihi Hetaraka, the leadership of Poutama Hetaraka and the exceptional work ethic the team came with.

1. (noun) sea centipede, Perinereis novaehollandiae - grows to 205 mm and is long and common under stones at low tide.
(te aka online dictionary)

"As we were building the waka we had a few visits from centipedes crawling its many legs along the rakau. We took this as a tohu. As a time marker the many legs of the centipede symbolises the many legs which marched in numbers to Poneke. The Toitu te Tiriti Hikoi that was happening throughout the motu at the same time as Rata Te Kimihanga, 2024."

Nopera Panakareao.

"The name Te Atakau was only supposed to mean the shadow you would see from a distance or if the waka were to paddle over you, later on we realised that it could also be taken in context to the treaty and current hikoi with Panakareao's whakatauki." Hine Waitai-Dye, Mātanga Tārai Waka.

Ko te mana i te whenua, ko Te Ātakau ki te moana.

Te Wero

Carved by Billy Harrison and Taroi Rawiri and assisted by local carvers from Tauranga Moana, Te Wero represents the challenges faced by our practitioners and by our people.

Finished using the Ngao Tū adze technique, Te Wero turns our thinking back to older skills and designs used by our ancestors.

Kia mau ki Te Wero hei taki i a tatou me te pātai, “He aha kei tua?”

Take up The Challenge that it may guide us and ask the question, "What lies beyond?"

‘Ina tiaki koe i te waka, ma te waka noki koe e tiaki.’ Tā Hekenukumai Puhipi

If you take care of the waka, the waka will take care of you.

After 10 days of mahi, Tauranga Moana welcomed the birth of three new Kōpapa waka.

Led by Pwo Wayfinder Jack Thatcher they were blessed in the waters of Te Taunga o Takitimu, the place where they were carved.

As Jack asked each of the carvers the question, ‘Ko wai te ingoa o tenei waka?’ What is the name of this canoe, they replied one by one:

Te Atakau!
Werimoana!

When you practice the three facets of humility the divine spirit shall be seen.

Todays Powhiri and Pure ceremony was an opportunity to welcome our distinguished guests, to share in the spirit of kotahitanga, to share our mana and to reset ourselves for the work ahead.
