Dan Kerins Photography

Dan Kerins Photography Commissioned photography and the written word, specialising in ill-planned and under-funded excursion It can horrify and it can inspire awe.

Self-taught from a collection of dog-eared and sub-adequate film and digital cameras, Dan Kerins has an unashamedly offbeat style and eclectic body of work, which has featured in exhibitions in the UK, New Zealand, and USA. He is regularly published online and in hard print, commissioned by commercial entities and private clients.

“If you a see a tea pot on a table it’s a tea pot.If you see a tea

pot on a plinth in an art gallery, it’s a ceramic art installation. For me that’s how photography works; the teapot is the world and the plinth is the four straight edges that the camera puts around it. How and what a photographer chooses to put in-between those four edges is no small calculation. There is no right or wrong to it, although each image does have a resonance. And that resonance can be a powerful thing - it can take you somewhere, it can prove a thing and disprove another, it can tell story, it can capture an abstract glimmer of life, it can inform and it can confuse, it can be honest and it can lie. What a thing to do with your day.”

SPIRITS OF SALTS opening this Thursday and running for six weeks is a photo documentary exhibition featuring a series of 21 framed images and a selection of artefacts from the the collections of local lifelong natural historian and beachcomber Bev Elliot . The exhibition is free for Kaikōura residents (although I’m sure a wee donation to our outstanding community focused museum would always be appreciated 😉) It’s a highly personal account of Bev’s unique life and I’m very proud of many of these images which have rekindled my love of documentary. Please go have look some time soon.

Back to the Creek, Kaikōura, 2023. The Cyclone swell left after the beast headed back out to the pacific. Since moving to the hills Don’t get down to the creek as much as I once did but still like to make the effort once in a while- especially when pacific is blowing up the shoreline. That freak energy of a wild big ocean was palpable that afternoon.

‘ Flashing Downtown’ Kaikōura,Jan 2023. Link in Bio for full shoot. Good to go flashing downtown for a Saturday evening - a reinvigorating night documenting awesome live music performances from the Effervescent JAGUAR SPECTACULAR’s debut and the release of exceptional second album- Avoca Street. Both bands smashed it. So good to see the excellent facilities being put to great use serving the arts in the community. Both bands are on I implore you to download.

“Old Dog-New Tricks” Kaikōura, 2016-2020. This is a photo of all the pencils that I’ve lost and subsequently found over the last 4 years. No doubt many more have fallen never to be found again. They would turn up lodged in some forgotten pocket, or in the footwell of my van-or rattling around in the washing machine so I started saving them until The day I could say that I passed my carpentry apprenticeship( which I did a few weeks back). It’s been a big transition for me both professionally and personally, it’s also been the most satisfying, affirming, fascinating exhausting and surprisingly insightful of journeys. I really can’t thank luke and .nic and the rest of the Team at LMC building and construction enough. I’m still blown away that they even took on a balding, rambling random Englishman and trained me up under the instruction of the masterful ,talented and ever watchful who somehow managed to coax and drag me across the finish line and to whom I’m ever grateful. Do things you like.
