Artist Spotlight 🔦
Nipuni Mallikaarachchi - Watercolour Artist

Nipuni is a contemporary Sri Lankan wildlife artist currently based in Rangiora NZ.
Her work is a profound celebration of avian life, deeply rooted in her childhood fascination with the natural world.

She holds a degree from the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo (2019).
Her artistic vision truly matured while teaching in a rural school within Sri Lanka’s lush Sabaragamuwa Province. Living in harmony with nature allowed her to observe native birdlife intimately, forming the core inspiration for her creative journey.

Choosing watercolour for its fluidity and softness, Nipuni captures more than just physical likeness. Her paintings evoke the elegance, motion, and quiet spirit of her subjects. Through delicate washes, layered tones, and fine detailing, she highlights the deep connection between wildlife and the environment.

As an artist practicing abroad, Nipuni uses her global platform to represent the rich biodiversity of her homeland. Through collections like Feather Souls (2023), Feathered Symphony (2024), and The Winged Season (2025), she aims to foster a deep appreciation for nature and advocate for wildlife preservation.

Head into the gallery to take a closer look at her incredible collection and watch out for her display at Kaiapoi art expo. We’re really proud to display her art as a guest artist.

Torlesse Range
Acrylic painting by resident artist and gallery founder Heather Hall.

Some paintings don’t just decorate a space… they shift the feeling of it.

Every layer, texture, and colour tells part of a story
one that may speak differently to each person who views it.

What does this painting make you feel?

Available to purchase in the gallery.

We recently hosted our very first introductory pastel workshop in the gallery, and what a beautiful beginning it was.

Each participant discovered their own unique style, experimenting with different pastels and papers to find what felt right for them.

Watching the creative process unfold from those first tentative marks to expressive, confident works was something truly special.

There’s something magical about seeing flow turn into form, and ideas transform into personal expression on paper.

We can’t wait to host many more of these inspiring sessions here in the gallery. 🎨
