All this year my wonderful friend and I have been learning raranga (the art of Māori harakeke weaving) from the talented kaiako Frank at Ōtari-Wilton Raranga. I find that there is a real magic in working with the leaves, transforming them from a living growing plant into something beautiful and lasting. Weaving is one of the few things that quiets my mind, a form of meditation via my hands. This is the most detailed, intricate piece I’ve done so far, using 180 whenu with a pikau finish of sorts, although it’s too big to be a backpack so I haven’t done pikau handles. I’m really grateful to be able to learn and explore this art
